America's Unofficial Ambassadors
Sending American Volunteers to the Muslim World
America's Unofficial Ambassadors researched more than 1,000 organizations for inclusion in their directory and to date, Middle East Fellowship is one of only 36 listed opportunities in 2011.
According to their website: "The underlying premise of America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) is that private American citizens have to do more to improve America's relationship with the Muslim World. America and the Muslim World face daunting challenges which traditional diplomatic efforts and official development assistance will not solve alone... We seek to galvanize the power of people to reach across cultural differences, form partnerships of mutual interest, and build peace."
Because they are now AUA approved volunteer programs, our Summer Encounter volunteers from the United States will also be eligible to apply for the organization's Mosaic Scholarship.
"We seek to galvanize the power of people to reach across cultural differences, form partnerships of mutual interest, and build peace."
Middle East Fellowship helps organize two separate summer volunteer programs in the Middle East: the Palestine Summer Encounter and the Damascus Summer Encounter program.
In both cases, participants spend time volunteering, studying Arabic, and building relationships within the local community. For Palestine Summer Encounter participants, a limited number of fellowships are also available through a generous grant from the Foundation for Middle East Peace.
You can support scholarships for our volunteers to Palestine and Syria by making a tax-deductible donation to Middle East Fellowship, a U.S. based 501(c)(3) nonprofit. If you've never supported us before now is the time!
Syria Makes Headlines As "Must See" Travel Destination for 2011

| 5 minutes of Syria |
Video [above] showcases some stunning images from Syria (particularly the Old City of Damascus). A recent article from the Los Angeles Times had this to say: "Syria, in the ancient heart of the Middle East, used to be rough, insular, politically extreme and all but off the map for travelers. Now, with a more forward-looking government, tourism increasing by almost 50% a year and opulent new hotels opening by the score, the luster is back on the magic lamp, making Syria one of the world's most compelling destinations for 2011."
