The scholarship is offered by the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund, founded in 1961 by Marian Davis, a teacher and political activist who fought for racial justice and labor rights. The fund was organized by Marian's husband, Horace B. Davis, as a tribute to her. In addition to Marian, the fund honors the contributions of Norton S. Putter, who gave generously of his time and resources. Norton was a strong advocate for justice and civil rights.

The scholarship rewards the efforts of student activists working for social change.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in APRIL of each year, and the award amount is usually $1,000 - $10,000.
