Communication can be defined as "the act or process of sharing information or intelligence'. According to Newman and summer, communication is an exchange of facts, ideas, opinions or emotions by two or more persons." Language is the most common medium of communication other means of communication are physical gestures, non linguistic symbols and codes, such as, traffic lights, road signs, railway signals etc.

Peter Little defines communication as, the process by which information is transmitted between individuals and organizations so that an understanding response results. For communication to be effective, the receiver should be able to clearly understand and comprehend the message transmitted by the sender. 

William Scott rightly says, "Administrative communication is a process which involves the transmission and accurate replication of ideas ensured by feedback for the purpose of eliciting actions which will accomplish organizational goals. "

Effective communication aims at eliciting a positive and result oriented response from the receiver. Main points in the definition of communication are -

• The process involves transmission of ideas.
  
• The ideas should be clearly and completely communicated.
  
• The receiver should fully understand the message and respond accordingly.
  
• The receiver should send back his feedback to the sender.
