The term material science consists of two words - Materials and science. Here the word materials refers to the engineering materials and those are limited to only solid materials. The word science in general refers to the knowledge arranged under general truth and principles and it naturally covers a wide range of subjects, but in material science,
science refers to the physical sciences relating to physics and chemistry.
As in material science we only confine to solid materials so the subject is related to solid state physics and solid state chemistry. Therefore, in general material science is defined as that branch of applied science which is concerned with investigation of the relationship existing between the structures of materials and their properties. For practical purposes, it also concerns with the interdisciplinary study of materials.
In today's world, when there are thousands of materials available to use for a particular application, knowledge of material science is extremely essential for an engineer. Engineering materials constitute the backbone of the
modern civilization.
In every sphere of human activity, engineering materials are used in one form or the other. In order to make extensive use of engineering materials, a critical analysis and knowledge of structure of different materials is necessary. Before determining a material for a given application or modifying it according to the requirements, it is very necessary to understand the fundamental nature and structure of the material, here material science found its application.
