Covalent bonds are easily formed between the atoms having unfilled p sub-orbits. The p sub-orbits are directional in nature. They allow overlapping of sub-orbits in the direction of densest electron probability cloud. Hence the covalent bonds are directional. The bond is formed at specific angles in different elements. The angle is known as bond angle. In ionic and between the negative ions and positive ions. These bonds are thus non-directional in nature.
