Farm Interns Needed in Montclair, Newark, Irvington

Purpose: To help lead youth farmers in growing produce to donate and help in weekly upkeep one of the Essex County 4-H Urban Youth Farm sites.

Time Commitment: 10-20 hours per week  

Term: Mid/late May-October

Responsibilities:

· Keeps track of crops, seed plantings, and grow schedules in a farm log and database

· Works with Farm Coordinator to lead youth farmers in: weeding, preparing beds, planting, and maintaining hens and chicken coop

· Manages youth farmers on either Montclair Miller Street farm site (16 Miller St. Rear), Montclair Historical Society farm site (108 Orange Rd.), Newark Sanford Avenue farm site, Irvington Nye Street farm site.

· Attends weekly meeting with Farm Coordinator and site interns to plan jobs for the week 

· Helps keep track of youth farmer volunteer hours

· Works hands-on at the farm site to maintain the land

· Aids in organic pest management, composting, irrigation and hen house maintenance

· Harvests and weighs produce to be donated to senior residences and faith-based organizations

· Helps coordinate field trips with youth farmers to MHS and other sites

· Help with outreach and social media (website, facebook, videos etc.)

Qualifications: A college student who has good communication skills, is reliable, and is eager to try their hand at farming. Some previous farming or gardening experience is preferred. The ability to work with a group of youth ages 11-17 as well as taking responsibilities and working independently are important. A serious interest in community service, healthy food and farming will make this internship most valuable to you. Must be willing to work hard and like to be outside. Must be able to lift 40lbs. Must be enthusiastic and have a good attitude!

Resources Available: County 4-H staff and Essex County 4-H Urban Youth Farms partners will be available for support and assistance and will provide appropriate communication, resources, and information.
