HAVE YOU SEEN THESE BIRDS?
The famous Composting Chickens of Governors Island have made their yearly move off the island and into new winter digs.
Warren Street / Saint Marks Community Garden in Brooklyn (photo: Arlo Davis -volunteer) and The Children’s Magic Garden in Manhattan are hosting Earth Matter’s 25+ birds until April of 2013. This temporary housing situation serves as a pilot for the gardens as they consider acquiring a flock and practicing chicken composting on their own.

Children's Magical Garden Corner of Stanton and Norfolk St. zip code 10002. The garden communities prepared the pampered pullets’ luxury housing with cozy coops, warm nest boxes, ready roosting bars, and room to run. Fed daily with food scraps from members’ homes and from neighborhood spots, the birds and caregivers actively participate in composting and food reclamation.
It’s a win, win, win situation as nitrogen rich chicken manure adds to healthy compost piles, food scraps are rescued from the city’s garbage stream, and fresh eggs are gathered by happy gardeners.
So far gardeners report the chickens are spoiled and well loved; members are receptive and responsible for their care shifts. The increase of outside visitors and their interest in the gardens, even in this winter weather, has been remarkable.
Thanks to food contributors:
·Tiny’s Giant Sandwich Shop for lettuces and bread—the gals love the greens
·Dylan Mabin, Warren Street/St. Marks garden member, and Kelso’s Brewery, for spent grain—super loved, the birds stampede when they see it.
·Park Slope Food Co-op—general food scraps fatten up the fowl

KAREN HATCH
Of all the chores associated with the composting process, turning the piles is one of the most arduous. No matter how big or small, in hot weather or cold, wet or dry, the pile must be turned. This takes someone with strength, dedication and reliability. In other words, it takes Karen Hatch.

NATURE'S CELEBRITIES
The NY Harbor contains a vast array of sea life existing in a delicate balance, each member serving an important function within the community. Consider the “ostreidae” -the delicious oyster we eat (not its glamorous pearl producing cousin).
