Need ideas and samples to update our recycling areas.  Active parent green team very motivated to purchase/build signage.
Also - does anyone know if DOS grant $ have to be spent with DOE vendors only?

It helps to make your own covers for the recycling bins. See picture below.
It also helps to have the bins in the same location in each room (usually by the door).
Some schools have kids collect the recycling at the end of the day to help the janitors who might otherwise just dump it.

NYC schools and residents can order FREE recycling decals and signage – as well as information to educate staff and students -- from the Department of Sanitation – go to www.nyc.gov/wasteless/schools and click on “school resources request form”. We recommend labeling every container and placing signs above the bins to show what goes where. Matt’s right that creating lids with slits or holes helps a lot; label these, too.

Check out prior year Super Recyclers winners to see how other schools set up their effective award-winning recycling programs. www.nyc.gov/wasteless/goldenapple. Do enter your own sustainability efforts in this year’s contests!  (Deadline: May 1)

Please note, DOE, DSNY, and GrowNYC have found without exception that it is not sustainable to have students collect recyclables; this must be institutionalized as the custodian’s responsibility or it doesn’t continue without an eternally vigilant “Green Team” (which usually isn’t formed until October, can’t service the building at all over the summer, doesn’t handle after-school events or rentals, etc.)

If your custodian is “just dumping” your separated recyclables, please contact your DOE DSF or Director of Sustainability immediately; this is illegal. sustain...@schools.nyc.gov

Jody, if you mean the $3,000 Golden Apple Awards prize money that your school won for the Intermediate Division Borough Winner in DSNY 2012 TrashMasters! Reduce & Reuse Challenge, these are generally unrestricted funds, but must be spent in FY13. Please contact me directly if you have questions. Thanks!

Why are school cafeterias instructed to put milk cartons in the same recycling bin with plastic bottles?

Because milk and juice cartons, and any aseptic and gable-top containers, are recycled in NYC’s blue stream along with metal, glass, and plastic:
