The Sixth Extinction by Kolbert is an in-depth look at the current environmental catastrophe that is occurring around the world. The author contends that there has been only six mass extinctions in Earth's history, and that this could happen again. This book will explain to readers how humans are indirectly causing the sixth mass extinction which will ultimately result in the extinction of many forms of animal life. It also discusses the implications of this in the food chain and human evolution.

The Sixth Extinction by Kolbert also outlines the reasons as to why some extinctions have occurred rather than all six occurring at once. It also explains that this is not the case with the majority of mass extinctions which cause mass death of animals and plants but not humans. This is in fact contrary to what most scientists believe to be the norm.
Along with providing a detailed explanation as to why sixteenth mass extinctions have occurred rather than all six occurring simultaneously, The Sixth Extinction also provides a timeline as to when various mass extinctions have taken place. It shows that the biggest mass extinction that took place was during the Permian (the name for the first five extinctions) where nearly all life on earth was lost. The reason for this is that this form of mass extinctions is characterized by one large explosive event which caused the death of all forms of life. The other four extinctions that took place in the Earth's history include the Mesozoic (which was another massive extinction), the Tertiary (the name for the last interval before the present day), and the Paleocene (a brief period before the present day). All of these mass extinctions led to the creation of new environments for different forms of animals, which led to the survival of some forms of flora and fauna.
