Tara Minnerly - Week 7 Differentiation Station Post:

Group members have posted a plethora of helpful ideas and resources for using technology to differentiate. One way I will differentiate process involves blogging. Using kidblog.org, http://kidblog.org/home.php, students will post responses to literature. As a result, they will be able to interact with more peers than just in assigned groups. Furthermore, it will help shyer students participate more and the word processing component will help students who may need more assistance with editing their writing.

Currently, I give students a list of alternative book report choices to replace the traditional book report and differentiate product. Some of the options include technology such as creating a brochure about the story’s setting using Microsoft Publisher. However, there are so many new, innovative presentation tools, such as Prezi, http://prezi.com/, and Glogster, http://edu.glogster.com/ that I will definitely show to my students and include them as project options.

Although I use Inspiration webs for vocabulary acquisition and teaching literary elements, there are other technology tools available to present this content in a different format. For example, sites such as Wordle, http://www.wordle.net/, and Tagxedo,  http://www.tagxedo.com/, will help students define vocabulary or compare characters in a much more interesting way.

Even though I have to be choosy since there isn’t a lot of technology available at my school, I am looking forward to using many of the wonderful tools provided by my colleagues!

Thanks,

Tara

Subject: Week 7 Assignment

Almost done!

Here's what we have to do this week:

Differentiation Station Assignment

This week, take this final opportunity to review the Differentiation
Station social network your group developed. Think about how you will
use the resources, strategies, tools, and ideas in your classroom.

In your group's Differentiation Station Wiki, post a summary of how
you will use the resources in the Differentiation Station social
network to help you implement the principles of Universal Design for
Learning and Differentiated Instruction.  Describe three ways you will
use technology to provide your students with instruction that meets
their diverse learning needs based on your learning as you developed
the Differentiation Station.

Suggested assignment length: 2-3 paragraphs

I am also going to try using the kidblog site too! I also have
searched for sites to respond to literature my students have read and
I think that this site looks like a good place to share ideas. I
think that by sharing ideas with other students, not just teachers, it
makes the assignments more meaningful and the students are more
motivated to do well.

Good luck!

Our Differentiation Station social network has not only armed me with
several solid online resources for planning and implementing
differentiated instruction, but also inspired me by exposing me to the
thinking and ideas of my group members. Already I have explored and
bookmarked all of the sources suggested by my members so that I have
easy access when designing with UDL and differentiation in mind.

For instance, one way that I can use technology to provide instruction
that meets diverse learning needs is by differentiating both process
and product by having students demonstrate thematic understandings
post-reading by creating Glogster interactive posters. This would
provide a powerful option for expression as well as a wonderful means
for engaging students.

Another group member introduced me to Prezis which I could use for
creating presentations of concepts, processes, or themes to present to
students at the beginning of a unit, or I could have students create
their own Prezis to process or reflect upon their learning at the end
of a unit.

Yet, another group member shared 100 Helpful Web Tools for every kind
of learner which will be a powerful resource for planning
differentiation to meet the needs of various learning styles and
preferences.

At this point I am still digesting all that I have learned from both
course resources and exposure to Differentiation Station. I have no
doubt that I will return to the group sources and discussion ideas at
a later time when I am in the midst of planning specific
differentiated lessons and units.

Tara,

I like your ideas for using Wordle and Tagxedo to help students define
vocabulary or compare characters in a creative and much more engaging
way. I knew I was attracted to both digital tools, but I was
uncertain about how I could make use of them. Thank you for sharing.

Mary
