Grade Level(s): 2nd
Subject(s): Math
Standard(s) or Outcome(s): Texas State Standards (TEKS):
Use place value to compare and order whole numbers to 999 and record
the comparisons using numbers and symbols (<, =, >).[1.C]
Determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar.[3.D]

Lesson Description:
Whole group mini-teach: Lesson introduction begins with a United
Streaming Video (TLC Elementary Problem Solving), which introduces
greater than, less than and equal to using one digit numbers and
(Mathematicia’s Workshop: Money). TTW facilitative class discussion on
place value and money based upon the introduction. TTW show a Place
Value/Money Keynotes presentation while continuing discussions.

Group work: Within cooperative learning groups, TSW complete 4 warm up
activities for each concept and 2-mixed review activities for the
concepts together. TSW continue this “math mix up” game until the
timer stops. After the lesson and game, TTW play an objective review
game that concludes the mini-teach and informally assesses where each
student is at in the mastery process.

Independent Menus/Contracts: TTW pull a small group back to the kidney
table to re-teach the lesson to students who did not show mastery in
whole group. TTW provide accommodations for all IEP and 504 students.
TTW conference with the students who are not going to be in small
group and create individualized menu/contracts that have the following
choices for continued learning and assessment. Contract choices are
based upon student interest, readiness and learning style.

• Ask for Kids search for two wish list toys and compare and contrast
the prices using a double bubble map (Our students are thinking maps
trained).
• Waterford lesson (22 minute supplemental computer program)
• Brain Pop video and summary dictated on garage band
• Think Central lesson on Money
• Think Central lesson on Place Value
• Create a Money Tic-Tac Toe board and play with a partner (my
students have created these previously).
• Create a Place Value Tic Tac Toe board and play with a partner.
• Cut out an ad for two different items in the newspaper and create a
double bubble map to compare and contrast the prices.
• Create a matching game for coin collections and their numeric
representation with dollars and cent signs.
• Create a matching game for numbers and their place value
representation.
• Create a thinking map on www.bubbl.us to define a three digit
number. Then compare that number to a different three-digit number.
• Play keep the change on http://www.apples4theteacher.com/change-game.html
TTW show and discuss the RUBRIC that will be used to assess the
activities on the menu/contract. This RUBRIC will be on the back of
each child’s menu/contract to view during independent time.

Technology Incorporation: In addition to United Streaming and the
Keynotes presentation, the following highlighted menu/contract choices
utilize technology
