NEWS
--- Enforex buys Don Quijote network. What next?
In big news for the Spanish language teaching industry, Enforex has
announced that it has taken over rival language school chain, Don
Quijote, to create the biggest Spanish language teaching company in the
world and to rival other international language school chains in the
global arena in terms of size and scale.
The news, announced just before Christmas, will mean no change to the
current operations of both school groups, said Antonio Anadon,
President of Enforex Group. He told Language Travel Magazine, "We want
to keep the two schools separate. We won't close any of the schools and
we are going to invest in and promote every single school."

--- Education in New Zealand is cheaper than related costs
A representative of Education New Zealand [1] Stuart Boag made public
interesting figures discovered as a result of a research conducted by
Ministry of Tourism. Foreigners were the subject of the poll, who have
been in the country less than 12 months and stated that their major aim
was studying. Despite the last year cost reduction for studying by 39%
up to 438 mln. NZD, general students' expenses are valued at 1,8 mlrd.
NZD. 1.8 dollar of other expenses accounts for 1 dollar spent for
education. It includes costs of accommodation, food, travelling and
entertaining. The number of foreign students in the country came down
by 13.2% up to 97,745 people in 2005. At that there's still a last
years' tendency [2]: gradual increase of the share of foreigners in the
sector of higher education in comparison with schools and language
courses. (According to the materials of newsletter "eduABROAD -
education in Australia and New Zealand [3]".)

--- The patient is more likely alive ...
In 2004/2005 academic year the decrease of foreign students number in
USA educational institutions made up only 1.3% in comparison with last
year. The data are provided by the annual "Open Doors" [1] survey of
international students studying on mainstream programmes in the USA,
published by the Institute for International Education (IIE). We remind
you [2] that according to IIE, in 2003-2004 the number of foreigners
among students dropped by 2,4%.
Commentators in the USA are seizing on the figures as testament to the
fact that the industry is rallying after some challenging years, and
that a drop in numbers of foreign students which followed after 11/09
teracts is growing weak. According to another online survey conducted
by IIE it was indicated that more institutional respondents in autumn
2005 reported a rise in international enrolments rather than a drop,
year on year. Nevertheless, the students in the sample, studying in the
country, denote a static performance.
However, it was a drop in numbers from doctoral degree and research
universities that affected the numbers negatively. Other institution
types and sectors, including English language training and practical
training, saw rises in numbers, according to IIE.
Allan Goodman, President of IIE, said, "Strong recruitment, combined
with more efficient and transparent student visa processes, have begun
to stem the tide of decreasing international student enrolment. We need
to continue [3] these concerted efforts to get the word out that our
doors are open to international students." (According to Language
Travel Magazine.)

--- UK schools mark increase in numbers of new pupils from Russia
The number of continental pupils at independent schools has risen by 11
per cent in the past year. According to the British newspaper
Independent, the rise has been most marked among youngsters from
Russia: by 38 per cent more than in 2004. Besides, numbers in pupils
from Spain have increased by 31 per cent, from France and Germany by 24
per cent.
European families have told headteachers they are worried about
worsening conditions in their local state schools. In particular,
Germany, whose education system was once the envy of the Western world,
with its technical schools running alongside the more academic stream,
has seen growing discipline problems and rising class sizes since
reunification.
Other headteachers said the growth of cheap flights was an influence.
Other factors are the sport and music in the UK curriculum, smaller
classes and individual attention given to pupils.
Independent newspaper gives data from annual statistic census of
Independent Schools Counsil (ISC), published [1] on May 9. ISC unites 7
largest associations of UK independent schools. 1,270 schools are
members of the association with general number of pupils near 500,000
people. ISC schools pupils make up more than 80% from total number of
all UK independent schools pupils. Independent schools are
non-governmental educational institutions, that is private, schools
having charitable status, religious communities schools, etc.
According to the 2006 ISC census, overall foreign pupil numbers in 2005
averaged 8,384 people, which is
by 870 people more in comparison with 2004 year. In particular, 343
pupils came from Russia.
Besides, ISC gives a few interesting facts. Thus, according to the
census, currents 9.87 pupils account for one teacher in ISC schools -
it's the best index than whenever. Besides, in comparison with 2004 fee
increases averaged 5.7% in 2005, which is lowest average rise recorded
since 1999.
