NEWS

--- About learning hotel management in New Zealand

A series of articles about hotel management study on the Parta site has
widened with a new feature about New Zealand. "National industry of
hospitality is only 50% staffed by those who have major specialization
in tourism, therefore the number of programs in hotel management,
tourism and holiday arrangement that are offered by New Zealand
institutions is increasing every year". At that, the only specialized
educational institution in the country that teaches hoteliers to be, on
the base of the hotel as in the best Swiss schools, is Pacific
International Hotel Management School, PIHMS. Besides describing PIHMS
programs and peculiarities, the author of the articles tells about
studying in the hotel management and tourism school, attached to
Auckland University of Technology, that is not only the biggest but
also the most famous in the country as well as in the three
technological institutes. Earlier the site published the articles on
studying hotel management in Australia [1], Canada and the Netherlands
[2], as well as in the Great Britain [3].

--- The UK became the paradise for "diploma producing factories"

International reputation of the UK universities is jeopardized by the
increasing number of "diploma producing factories" that refer to
British educational institutions to sell fake degrees. Special world
education quality observers are worried by the fact that the UK became
the paradise for foreign companies pretending to be universities and
selling degrees, scientific included, online. The companies are using a
loop-hole in the English law that allows them to register in the
country as a university because they do not offer British-standard
degrees. The companies position themselves as British institutions but
they mention on their web sites that their degrees are not legislated
by the British academic organization in very small print.

Peter Williams, Quality Assurance Agency chief executive director,
says: "At the moment there is no monitoring of foreign education
providers as they don't claim to give British-standard diploma". Erik
Johannsson from Swedish Agency for Higher Education informed: "Since
1998 we stated 14 similar cases in the UK, and it's more and more every
year". The exact number of companies producing diplomas that refer to
the UK institutions is not known. However the research done by the
agency has shown the number of fake universities has increased all over
the world - from 200 in 2000 to 800 last year.

Meanwhile, General Medical Council has checked a few foreign medical
schools active on the territory of the UK. One of the examples known to
the inspectors is Earlscroft University which values bachelor's degree
at $150. That university states that tests are passed for "experience"
and promises to deliver the diploma in 21 days.

Bill Rammell, Minister of Higher Education of the United Kingdom,
informed: "Together with the state bodies and individuals all over the
world we do our best to close activity of similar 'diploma factories'
and to neutralize fake providers". (According to the "eduABROAD - News
of the UK and Ireland education" newsletter").

The Educational Testing Service company that develops and takes such

changes for GRE test that were planned to make as early as this year.

institutions, had to be made in internet-format after TOEFL. However
when switching to the new format, there were some "difficulties in
