--- UK Embassy in Russia has chosen the companies that will accept now
visa applications

As RATA-news informs, the UK Embassy in Russia has chosen a visa
partner. Before we have written [1] that in spring of 2006 a new visa
system will be presented that simplifies the procedure of British visa
registration. In connection with switch to the new working system
indeed the UK Embassy in Moscow from November 25 has temporarily
stopped accepting [2] applications from citizens and works now only
with accredited couriers.

In the beginning of autumn the UK Embassy announced a tended to define
a Russian partner that will take administrative functions of the visa
department, i.e. will be accepting from the Russians the documents
necessary of visa issuing. In particular, it includes such data as name
and surname of an applicant, his passport number, date of birth, etc.
Besides, a partner will be receiving consular fee and will be
delivering documents to the visa department of the Embassy and then
will return passports with visas to citizens.

Yesterday the tender winners' names were announced: it's a private
company Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) that will perform new
functions in partnership with Star Travel the Russian tourist operator.
In the Embassy they underlined especially that anyway the decision to
issue visa is of British visa officers, and new partners of dipp
representatives will not influence it.

As the deputy chief of press service of UK Embassy Anton Atrashkin
explained to RATA-news, the new system is intended to open 11 centers
of applications reception in most large Russian cities until April-May
of 2006. Both travel companies and private applicants will be able to
apply not only through consulates in Moscow, St. Petersburg or
Yekaterinburg, as it is now, but to bring their passports and other
necessary documents in any of neighbor representative offices. These
centers will have a longer working day that the visa department of the
Embassy. It is unknown so far how much the new system will increase the
total visa cost.

Among reasons that induced the UK Embassy to hand a part of its
functions to third part the diplomats call it a yearly 20% increase of
the number of UK visas applications during the last three years.
According to Rosstat's data, in 2004 UK was visited by 66,900 tourists
from Russia, which is by 22.8% more that in 2003. For 6 months of 2005
34,900 Russians took a vacation in this country - by 12.8% more that at
the same time in 2004.
