--- Higher education behind the Great Wall of China
Karriera magazine's May issue published two interesting and informative
materials devoted to higher education in China. Apart from describing
educational potential of China, the author of the article "Education a
la Chinese" portrays job placement prospects in Russia and in China of
a Russian graduate of Chinese educational institution. Besides, two
graduates of Chinese business schools and a participant of language
program in a university share their experience.
Here are a few major facts about higher education in China. More than
390 educational institutions have got certification in teaching
foreigners. By various estimations, now about 2,000-2,500 Russian
students study in China. Mostly our students go there to study the
language and very often they choose a one-year internship in a
university. In the judgment of representatives of Ministry of education
of Chinese People's Republic, the reason of growing interest to
studying in China is, most likely, a phenomenal growth of the country's
economics and understanding the fact that speaking Chinese
significantly widens career's possibilities. Studying in China costs
cheaper than most of foreign and even Moscow universities: on average
$2,500-3,000 a year. It would be interesting to know a specialist's
opinion: "They go to China not for diplomas but for speaking with
native speakers, learning philosophy of education and adapting to the
nation's mentality, which offers advantages over those who are far from
Asian culture".
Another material about China - "Underheaven truth [1]" - is written by
a student of ISAA at M.V. Lomonosov MSU who spent a year studying at
one of the Chinese universities. It describes from the first person all
troubles of documents registration for internship, peculiarities of
studies and student's life. The most valuable section is "Advice for
those travelling in China".

--- About education in Australia...
"Komsomolskaya Pravda" published an article "In Australian place, in
the other planet...". For those who are at least a bit interested in
education abroad the article won't say anything new. Perhaps, the most
useful information is that from June 11 till 18 in Manezh "The week of
Australia in Moscow" is to take place where a stand / booth dedicated
to education in Australia is going to function. The author also gives a
link to an official web-site for foreign students where one can, in
particular, use a database [1] on scholarship.

--- About accessibility of higher education in Sweden
One of Rockefeller internet-magazine's last issues published an article
"To get a diploma - in Sweden!". Its author was quite convincing in
breaking stereotypes about inaccessibility of getting education abroad.
Basing on his own experience he describes how to get Master's degree on
one's own in Swedish educational institutions. We note that for
foreigners education is for free in Sweden. For the time being 29
higher educational institutions offer altogether about 300 Master's
degree programs. Certainly, living in the country costs but here one
can turn to organizations that give scholarships and grants.

--- About Russian students' preferences concerning language courses
The UK was once again the most popular destination to learn language
for Russian students: 65% of students chose it in 2005, which is by 14%
more than in 2004. These are the results of survey over 15 educational
agencies from Russia, the report of which was published by Language
Travel Magazine. Malta was also more popular, taking second place with
10% in the list of favourite destinations in 2005, up from fourth
position in our previous survey. In contrast, the percentage of
students choosing to study French in France decreased from 13 per cent
previously to just three per cent. With France, Germany and Spain are
all in fourth place, succeeding New Zealand (5%). Australia, Canada and
the USA attracted 2% of students each. Thus, six of the top nine
favourite destinations for Russian students were English-speaking
countries. No wonder, in the top five most popular languages the first
place takes English: in 2005 78% students went to study it. German
takes the second place (7%), the third place is shared by Spanish and
French (6%), and Italian was chosen for study by 2% of students.
Overall, Russian students (60%) stayed in host family accommodation
when studying overseas, and about a third (29%) lived in a school's
residence. The average length of stay for Russian students was five
weeks. Educational agencies charged their clients a fee of between e50
and e300 (USD 60-362). The total number of students from Russia placed
by agencies in the survey was 4,103.
