TOMORROW: Transforming Schools with PLT GreenSchools! Water Investigation

Tuesday, April 24, from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Eastern

Register Now!

Through this webinar, you will:

  • Find out what students and teachers at Bloomfield Tech, in Bloomfield, NJ, are doing to develop a sustainable campus. They will discuss their geodesic dome greenhouse, energy lab, green roofing, automation and monitoring systems, and methods for capturing water. Learn how they measure the success of each one of these green projects, and incorporate them into student learning.
  • Hear from students and teachers at St. Paul Lutheran School in Lakeland, FL, about how they reduced their school's water use after completing PLT's GreenSchools! Water Investigation. They will share how installing rain barrels has decreased their school garden water consumption by 660 gallons per week during the growing season, their design for a turtle pond that uses recycled water, and the educational campaign the Green Team implemented with the entire student body and community.

Transforming Schools with PLT GreenSchools! Waste Investigation

Wednesday, May 23, 2012, from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Eastern

Register Now!

Through this webinar, you will:

  • Learn how to set up a school recycling program and how your school can become involved in the Recycle-Bowl competition, a free competition and benchmarking tool for K-12 school recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities. Kelley Dennings, Director of Recycling Programs and Services with Keep America Beautiful, will discuss how school recycling programs across the nation compete in a race to collect the most recyclables.
  • Hear from students and teachers from St. Columba School in Durango, CO, about their newest endeavor in reducing school waste through a solar vermicomposting bin. Students have taken the lead in feeding worms from the school cafeteria and are studying the science behind vermicomposting as well as the bin's impact on reducing school waste. You'll also hear about their experience conducting PLT's GreenSchools Waste Investigation, integrating the investigation in to the curriculum, and how they are using the results to further their school's waste reduction.
PLT's GreenSchools! webinar series provides teachers, school administrators, and students with valuable information and tips to implement the PLT GreenSchools! Investigations. We encourage school Green Teams to participate as a group.  Participation in the webinars is free, made possible in part by funding from the U.S. Forest Service. To register and learn more, go to www.plt.org/webinars. If you have questions, contact Rachel Bayer at rba...@plt.org.

You can find more about upcoming webinars and view recordings for past webinars at www.plt.org/webinars.

Join PLT's GreenSchools! network by registering your school at www.GreenSchools.org and become eligible to apply for a PLT GreenSchools! grant.  The next grant deadline is May 18, 2012.

To receive updates on webinars, success stories and practical advice from PLT GreenSchools! teachers and students working on the ground to green their schools, and additional tools and resources, sign up or re-subscribe (required, due to recent re-design) to receive PLT's e-newsletter, The Branch. For example, check out the EE Resources section in our latest issue to find out how your students can contribute to research about tree biomass, and how trees respond to climate, by participating in The Smithsonian Institution's "Tree Banding" citizen science project. Sign up today and, if you are selected, the Smithsonian will mail you a kit that includes everything you need to get started.
