*** Remember: The teacher has already presented a brief Power point lecture about the Greeks' world views and religion of the Ancient Greeks. Students have some knowledge of the Myths, Polytheism, Gods and Ancient Greek peoples. Additionally, students have already learned about the myths and gods of the Ancient Egyptians.

OBJECTIVE: Students will understand the three of the Ancient Greeks’ religious and world views found in the myth of Persephone.

Three World Views of the Ancient Geeks Reflected in the myth of Persephone

·         The Greeks view of the natural world: How Seasons are created.

·         Gods and People Interdependence: Worship, Sacrifice and Offerings

·         The worlds of Gods and Humans: Mt. Olympus, Earth and the Underworld.

I.                    Comparing Greek Myth & Egyptian Myth

You have read the Egyptian myth of Osiris and Isis. Now that you have learn about Demeter and Persephone construct a Venn Diagram of the similarities and differences between the Greek Myth of Persephone/Demeter and that of Osiris and Isis. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_of_Osiris_and_Isis)

a.      In groups of five. Students will identify the Ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian views on religion and view of the natural world.

b.      Each group will contribute two religious or natural world views (1 Egyptian/1Greek).

c.       Together as a class we will fill out a “Giant Venn Diagram” and we will identify the similarities.

 SIMILARTIES

II.                  EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!: The Ancient Greek Temple

Yesterday and article was posted on a European Newspaper. “The ruins of an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Demeter and Persephone was found….” After reading the myth about Persephone. What artifacts do you think were discovered in the ancient temple ruins?

a.      Individually students will create one artifact found at the ancient temple.

b.      They will explain why they think such an artifact could have been found.

c.       Present the artifact to the class.

III.                The Greek Religious Hierarchy Pyramid: INQUIRY LEARNING

Throughout the myth you were able to see the different worlds of the Gods and Humans, but you also learn that there is a connection (interdependence) between the gods.

For example: Our School Hierarchy Pyramid

Using the “Hierarchal Pyramid” similar to the one we created for our school. Crate a Hierarchal Pyramid depicting the order of the Greek religion, as reflected on the myth of Persephone. Who came first who was at the bottom? Don’t forget to label the characters accordingly and label the dwelling of the Gods and the dwelling of Humans.

a.      In groups of 5 students will create an Ancient Greek Religious Pyramid using the myth of Persephone as a guide.

b.      INQUIRY LEARNING

a.      ASK: Who forms part of the pyramid, and in what order?

b.      INVESTIGATE: Read the Myth Together

c.       CREATE: Create the Pyramid & Label the characters

d.      DISCUSS: Present your group’s findings to the class.

e.      REFLECT: How were the Ancient Greeks depended on the Gods?

How do the Gods depend on them?
