I am a big tea drinker and tea bags are convenient. I was just
talking to someone about gluten free issues and she mentioned the
actual bags have gluten in them. A quick internet search revealed it
may be the glue used to seal the bags that has gluten. I drink Tetley
tea.

Is anyone aware of tea bags that use gluten? This would be something
to be aware of when going out and having a cup of tea.

The following is from the Tetley website

Does Tetley® have gluten in its tea bags / tea mix?

We are aware of the allergies suffered by some from gluten. All of the
tea bags packaged for Tetley USA Inc. for retail sale, including our
decaffeinated, flavored and green blend tea bag products are gluten
free. The iced tea mix sold under the Tetley® Brand name does not
contain gluten either. The caramel coloring used in the iced tea mix
is manufactured from high dextrose containing corn syrup, which is
gluten free.

I remember a rumour going around some time ago about gluten in tea bags. However, it was just a rumour. Tetley does not have gluten in their tea bags - see the following link to their web site.

Speaking of tea: you do have to read ingredient labels on herbal teas as some of them do contain gluten.

My understanding was that some tea bags use an adhesive (like that on
envelopes) that can have gluten in them. I know my sister has had
reactions when there is no other gluten present in the ingredients.
Because it's in the packaging and not in the ingredients they don't have
to list it. Some companies are figuring it out and say they don't have
it in the bags, but I lean towards stapled or stringed bags as a result.
I always double check with the company first before buying their tea.
If there is more info out there on the adhesive question I'm definitely
interested.
