'The worst disorder, drug abuse, crime and chaos are in places run by woke

Pierre Poilievre says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the NDP are to
blame for violent crime becoming normalized in Alberta under a “catch-and-
release” bail system.

The Conservative Party of Canada leader made a campaign-style speech
Thursday in Edmonton, reiterating demands for bail reform from all 13 of
Canada’s premiers and many of the country’s police services. His call
comes after police reported two stabbings in Edmonton and two shootings in
Calgary in the previous 24 hours. Edmonton has seen six fatal shootings
since March 7.

“Trudeau and the NDP have caused this crime wave with policies that allow
the same repeat violent offenders loose on our streets to terrorize
innocent people,” Poilievre told reporters.

When asked by a reporter whether Alberta’s UCP government needs to do more
to address social issues like homelessness to better prevent crime,
Poilievre pointed to crime levels in Vancouver and praised Alberta for
prioritizing addiction treatment services.

“The worst disorder, drug abuse, crime and chaos are in places run by woke
NDP, Liberal mayors and premiers,” he claimed, adding violence is a
nationwide problem.

“If it’s happening everywhere in Canada, then it can’t be the
responsibility of one provincial government,” he said, adding the high
cost of living has led to increased homelessness. He promised to cap
government spending if elected and jail violent repeat offenders.

After meeting with provincial and territorial leaders last month, Liberal
Justice Minister David Lametti promised he would move quickly on “targeted
reforms” to the Criminal Code to update the country’s bail system.
