Former city councillor and federal cabinet minister Amarjeet Sohi has jumped out to an early lead over Coun. Mike Nickel in the Edmonton mayor’s race, but nearly half of voters remain undecided, a new poll indicates.
In a Leger poll conducted for Postmedia, Amarjeet Sohi is in the lead with 29 per cent support followed by Mike Nickel at 10 per cent and former councillor Kim Krushell with five per cent. The other contenders are closely bunched together, all with less than five per cent of the committed vote. But 43 per cent of eligible voters said they don’t know which of the 10 registered candidates they will cast a ballot for in the October election.
The po ll, conducted online from July 22-26, surveyed 526 Edmontonians over the age of 18.
Ian Large, Leger's executive vice-president for Western Canada, said the high number of undecided voters isn't surprising in a race without an incumbent and four candidates with council experience. Other high-profile issues, such as a potential federal election and the COVID-19 pandemic, are also currently taking the spotlight away from the race, which Large predicts will start shifting as the election draws closer.
