A 52-year-old man with a history of assaulting women is wanted by RCMP for two separate domestic assaults.
Michael Richard Cole was convicted of brutally beating Dianne Denovan in 2016.
The two met through an online dating site and the assault happened about seven months into the relationship.
He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for the assault and was released in November 2019.
Denovan says she first learned of his dangerous past at Cole's parole hearing.
"I didn't find out until his parole hearing that he had ... prior assault charges," she said.
"The parole board specifically said they felt that was underreported. That he had many others."
The case was used to support implementing Clare's Law to Alberta on April 1, which allows people who are worried by their partner's behaviour to apply to search for violence-related criminal records.
It also helps put them in touch with the right community resources to help them recover and stay safe.
In the first five months after the implementation of Clare's Law on April 1, there were 226 applications to see a partner's history.
Police shared records in 102 of those cases.
Cole is wanted for uttering death threats and assault in incidents that took place in Cochrane in January and September of this year.
He is described as being 180 centimetres (5'11") tall and weighing 86 kilograms (190 lbs.) with grey hair and blue eyes.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Cochrane RCMP at 403-932-2211, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Please take a good look at the man in this photo. Memorize his face. His name is Michael Richard Cole and if you see him, or have seen him, please call the Police or Crime Stoppers immediately. There is currently a Canada wide warrant for his arrest and he is incredibly dangerous. How do I know? Because, 2 years ago, this horrible man tried to take my Moms life.
My mom met this man online in March 2016 and they dated for approx. 7 months. He seemed like a normal man. He seemed to treat my mom well. But that all changed in the snap of a finger.
On October 23rd, 2016, my mom and “Rick” were out to watch live music with friends. They had gotten into an argument earlier and he was asked to leave venue they were at. She stayed behind to enjoy her evening, but over the few hours she was there, she received several messages from Rick. These messages were aggressive, angry, verbally abusive and threatened suicide. When my mom arrived home, he had waited for her to return and attacked her. As she was getting ready for bed, he came into her bedroom, hit her over the head with her stainless steel bedside lamp post and knocked her unconscious. He then continued to assault her for hours. He dragged her up and down the stairs, he broke her bones, he knocked out her teeth, he pulled out her hair, he tied her up with tape and then again on her bed with curling iron cords. He tried to pull her to the opening in her balcony and threatened to throw her over and kill her. This went on for nearly 4 hours. He finally stopped and told her he would be back. When he went out to the garage, my mom knew that would be her chance to escape. How she had the strength or clarity to get out of the house is something I will never understand but will always be so grateful for.
Fortunately, my mom managed to run to the neighbours. I will be eternally grateful to the kind couple who opened their door and took her in to safety in the very early hours of the morning. They gave her clothes and called the Police. That was when my phone rang. I answered the phone half asleep but was immediately out of bed the moment I heard my mom say "Nikole, I need help." I just knew in the pit of my stomach that something was terribly wrong. However, nothing could've prepared me for what I was about to see.
When I arrived at the neighbours, the police warned me that my mom most likely didn't look like herself. That was a serious understatement. My mom was completely unrecognizable. The moment she saw me she passed out, I would assume with relief, and I immediately put on a brave face, knowing I had to be strong for her.
She was taken by ambulance to the hospital where she stayed for over 3 weeks. She had 2 broken wrists, broken ribs, a broken cheek bone, a lacerated eye, large cuts on her face, missing teeth and a bleed on her brain. As those injuries started to heal over the 3 weeks, the real work was about to begin. My mom suffered from severe vertigo due to the brain injury/head trauma which caused her to be instantly nauseous for months. She was treated by so many amazing Drs, nurses and therapists. We are so grateful for their care and kindness and to the police officers who went out of their way to visit my mom personally during her time at the hospital.
In the first 24 hours at the hospital, I took over being the main liaison with my family, my mom's work, the police officers, investigators and medical staff. We learned that Michael Richard Cole aka "Rick" had stolen my mom's car, her bank and credit cards and had fled. He ditched the car a week later but remained "missing" for nearly a month. While my mom was safe in the hospital as an anonymous patient, the police felt it was best for her to stay in a shelter until Rick was found. While in the shelter, Rick started creating fake profiles on Facebook with threatening images and messages that were directed towards my family. Finally, 4 weeks after this incident, he was found and arrested. Those 4 weeks were filled with so many emotions, so much anger and so much fear.
We moved my mom out of the home where the incident took place. We repaired the holes in the walls, washed and repainted the blood stains and repaired the broken windows. It was a never- ending nightmare. This nightmare that started 2 years ago, is still on going.
After moving my mom out of that home, she moved in with me for 6 months. She was overcome with debilitating fear, anxiety and depression. She could not sleep and when she did, the nightmares and effects of PTSD would force her back awake. She could not leave my apartment; most days could not even get out of bed. It took a lot of time, support, trial and error and patience, but slowly we started making progress. It took months of counselling, appointments with various Drs and therapists, visits with a Brain Injury clinic, and never-ending support from family and friends to slowly start getting my mom back to a sense of normalcy.
After Rick was arrested, we waited a few weeks for his sentencing hearing. In this hearing, we had hoped that he would be given maximum time for his crime. We hoped that he would be charged with attempted murder but in the end, he was only charged with aggravated assault and was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Not nearly enough time. We also learned in this process that this was not Rick's first assault charge. In fact, we learned that he had 13 previous charges. 13! We also learned that the time that Rick was in custody before his sentencing would be counted as time and a half towards his time served. So, in the end, he served only 2 years of jail time. As of November 2018, his sentence was served and he was released.
My mom had requested the condition that he not be allowed back into Calgary upon his release. However, due to the fact that he was such a high risk to reoffend, the court felt it was best to release him back into the city where they could keep a close watch over him. His release requirements were that he report to a half-way house in the city, have no contact with my mom or anyone in my family, no social media and no encounters or relationship with women. Within less than a week, he created a new Facebook profile and sent my mom a friend request. We immediately reported this to the parole board. A few days ago, they contacted my mom to inform her that Rick was now missing.
HE IS MISSING. Three words that have erased any progress that has been made over the last 2 years. Words that have reignited fear, anxiety, anger and frustration in my Mom, myself and my family. These words have recreated sleepless nights and brought on a tidal wave of anxiety. We are once again overcome with the feeling that suddenly our safety is at risk.
UPDATE: Rick was found again in January of 2019 and taken back into custody. He was given 30 extra days for breaching his parole conditions. He was also placed in protective custody at the Bowden Institution as they were “worried for his safety”. As of August 9th, 2019, he has been released back into Calgary on another statutory release.
This man is once again, back out in the public and at high risk to reoffend. The purpose of this post is to bring awareness, to inform and to warn the public. This man is highly dangerous and there is a great chance that he will do this again. Please share his photo to help increase the chance that the people of Calgary will recognize him.
