Pro Coro Canada and NorTerra Inc. present
Rankin Inlet Throat-Singers

On Sunday, October 27 2002, at 2 pm, the Winspear Centre for Music will be
filled with the sounds and colours, spirit and energy of Canada's great
north. Six enthusiastic and gifted young people from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut
will be presenting an awe-inspiring range of Inuit culture, which will
thrill and educate Albertans of all ages.

The group, Kivalliq Tatigiit (making its first appearance in Edmonton), will
be performing a dazzling array of Inuit drum dancing, an incredible display
of traditional Inuit games (athletic tests of strength and balance), plus a
special peek into the creation of their beautifully crafted clothing.

A highlight of the afternoon will be the rare and exotic sounds of Inuit
throat-singing. This special style of singing imitates the sounds of nature
(wind, rushing water, geese, dogs and sea gulls). It is a delight not only
to listeners, but to the performers as well - it usually ends with the two
women bursting out in laughter.

Pro Coro Canada will be joining Kivalliq Tatigiit in performing traditional
Inuktitut "pisiq" (personal) songs. Alilumma was created by a mother
chanting to her son - showing the love she has for him. Qaumatillugu Suli is
an ancient celebration song from further north, where there is total
darkness during winter. When the sun finally rises in the spring, this is
the song they sing to celebrate the fact that they have survived the cold,
dark winter and its struggles.

Gorretti Panika, a member of Kivalliq Tatigiit, explains: "The Inuit culture
has been in danger of being forgotten; performing it on stage is helping to
keep it remembered and alive. This is why we are so proud to show it to you
in Edmonton. Many Inuit now travel to many countries, giving the world a
taste of Inuit culture. We consider it a privilege to show our Inuit
identity to the people of Alberta."

Pro Coro Canada is proud to present Kivalliq Tatigiit in its annual
"Connections Canada" concert, and gratefully acknowledges the support
provided by NorTerra Inc.

Tickets ($23.50 - $33.50) are available through the Winspear Box Office
(780) 428-1414.
