I have installed Mendeley Desktop ( -mendeley-desktop/ubuntu/instructions/) in my computer. It turns out that I can only run the program through the terminal, by sudo mendeleydesktop . If I try to run it from the dock, or even through the terminal without sudo, it doesn't run. It stars briefly (0.5 sec) but suddenly it closes.

Is it possible to automatically synchronize Mendeley desktop every time a new reference is added?Every time I add a new reference using the web plugin, I have to sync again the desktop version, so that the new reference is recognized and can be cited in Word. Is it possible to automate the process?

A "Watched Folder" is a folder from which Mendeley automatically uploads files such as PDFs into your Mendeley library. You can set it up by going to Mendeley Desktop > Preferences > Watched Folder [On a PC go to Tools > Options > Watched Folder] and putting a checkbox next to the folder in your harddrive that you designate as the one for Mendeley to "watch." In the screen shot below, I have named my folder "Mendeley Watch Folder" and placed it on my desktop.

Mendeley is a web application that helps you collect, manage, and cite research sources. It's easy to use, accessible within your web browser and/or on your desktop, and best of all it's free. Mendeley allows you to organize, annotate, and highlight PDFs, add to your citations, organize them into collections for different projects, and create bibliographies using Word or OpenOffice. It is available to use in any web browser and surprisingly powerful. Mendeley also has a downloadable desktop application for your Mendeley library.

You may notice on Mendeley's downloads page that there are two seemingly similar desktop programs: Mendeley Desktop and Mendeley Reference Manager. In 2020, Mendeley announced that they were transferring Mendeley Web Libraries to their new Reference Manager, which would also have a downloadable desktop version. While you can still download and use Mendeley Desktop (the old version), we recommend that you download and use Mendeley Reference Manager, since it is more up-to-date and integrates easily with the web version.

ChromeClick 'Customise' (three black lines on the top right of the screen), and then 'Settings'. Click 'Show Advanced Settings' at the bottom of the page, then click 'Content Settings...' under 'Privacy'. Then, under 'Cookies' click 'Manage exceptions...' and allow mendeley.com, then click 'Done'.

Mozilla FirefoxClick the Menu button at the top right and click 'Options'. Then, under the 'Privacy' tab, either set the 'History' drop down option to 'Use custom settings for history' tick 'Accept Third Party Cookies'. Add www.mendeley.com to the 'Exceptions' box. Click 'Save Changes' to save. For more information you can have a look at Mozilla Firefox's page on enabling and disabling cookies.

Mendeley is a free citation manager available from mendeley.com. Please note that you do not need to choose an institutional login; the software is free and Virginia Tech does not have an institutional license. It exists in both a desktop version and an online version. What makes Mendeley unique is that it's also a social network for academics. In addition, Mendeley suggests new citations to you based on what's in your library already. It also allows you the chance to share your library with others as well as annotate PDFs.

For additional help using Mendeley at Newman Library, contact mendeley-...@vt.edu. Please included a detailed description of the problem you're experiencing, as well as any screenshots of the error. You can also sign up for a virtual consultation here (select Citation Managers from the list of topics).
