Dear Parents,

School Bus Transportation: BPS transportation this week will start picking up
bus riders at their stops earlier than had become their practice. Please make
sure to arrive at your child's bus stop *at least five minutes before the
scheduled bus pickup time*. Any questions about pickup times: call BPS
transportation at 617-635-9520, or call Mr. Felix at the Edison school,
617-635-8436, ext. 2128.

Walker arrival times: Starting Monday, October 31st, the school will be using
new computer software for tracking student attendance. If you are
walking/driving your child to school, please ensure that your child arrives by
8:15 am if you want her to receive a free school breakfast, or by 8:25 am if she
will not be eating the school breakfast. Any children who are not in their
classroom by 8:30 am will be marked as tardy.

Note that students are not marked as tardy if they arrive late due to the school
bus arriving late.

Sincerely,
-Michael Pahre

I have a concern regarding this new morning time-line. The current teacher contract says our students can't be in their rooms with their teachers until 8:20, so at this point students arriving prior to that go to the understaffed cafe and wait to be released to their rooms. Many walker families bring their kids to their rooms and wait, however if we now bring our children earlier than 8:15 to ensure we have time to get them in on time they will be sent to the cafe. There is no room for 7 elementary grades worth of students to fit in one half of the cafe each morning as we are assuming all the buses will also now be arriving at that time sending their students to the cafe as well.
Has a plan been put in place to monitor all 500 or so elementary students that are expected to wait in the Foster Street Side of the cafe?
Thanks for all your hard work!!!

Dear Vanessa,

You are correct that students are not to go to their classrooms on
their own before 8:20 am.

When students arrive before 8:20 am, they are sent to the cafeteria --
whether or not they wish to eat breakfast -- where there is staff to
monitor them. After 8:20 am, the students head to their classrooms.

If it turns out that we have an overflow in the cafeteria at 8:15 am,
then we will want to talk to the administration on how to address it.
That would actually be a *good* problem -- having lots of kids
arriving on time, not late! Let's watch and wait to see how the
current plan is working.

If students are not planning on eating breakfast, then they only need
to be in their classroom by 8:25 am -- and the teachers are there, in
the classroom, by 8:20 to receive them.

All the best,
-Michael
