Shhh! Please tell everyone! (24:32; 30:21)
Edip Yuksel
(In violation of the cardinal rule of my profession, I will start with
a long paragraph, and I will violate another rule by making it
irrelevant to the main topic, which might be very important for you or
your loved ones).
I know that I can walk and talk at the same time. Well, like many of
you, I am doing even more. I am a juggler; I am a man with many hats
and shoes. Since my early twenties, I have been in the business of
learning and sharing my thoughts through teaching and writing. I
currently teach at two institutions: Philosophy and Logic courses at
Pima Community College and various courses at my son's K-12 school
(last year, I thought two: Technology/Research and Turkish). There
have been semesters where I teach all age groups: from pre-teens to
students who are older than me. I also write articles and books on
"dangerous or sensitive issues" in two languages: Turkish and
English... In addition to teaching and writing professionally, I have
been also a consistent participant of public discussion forums in two
subjects: religion and politics. Furthermore, I religiously respond to
dozens of emails I receive daily from around the world which takes
considerable time. Every year, I respond to a few thousand emails I
receive from a rainbow of people: from highly educated to arrogantly
ignorant, from fantastic geniuses to complete idiots, from sane to
insane people. As you might know, I do also occasionally travel around
the world to give lectures and participate in conferences to promote
monotheism, peace, justice and progress... (BTW, I will be in Dallas for
MPJP's second conference in July 19). On top of these, as some of you
know, I am running a small publishing house, brainbowpress, to publish
books promoting critical thinking (FYI, if you are cooking a delicious
book, let me know!) I should not forget to add another important duty:
I am the husband of a Persian princess and the father of two brilliant
young boys who demonstrate extraordinary potentials and risks. Thus,
as part of my duty to my beauty, like every normal husband, I do shop
with a list dictated by her who also works and concerned to make the
ends of our costly lifestyle meet. As part of my long list of chores,
I do water the yards, fix the garage door, mentor my kids, and manage
enduring continual cultural and generational shocks, such as listening
to their favorite but outrageous song lyrics, tolerating silly movies,
and stupid friends.
Why I am telling you all these? Why should you care? Well, please
listen. Recently, I realized that there is another task I am engaged
in. It is now on my plate which is very full. It emerged slowly and
naturally, and I have difficulty in admitting it among my jobs and
chores that I just listed above. I do not wish to consider myself
involving with that kind of business, but I cannot escape it. I am now
going to let the cat out of the bag: As it seems, some of my contacts
consider me a potential matchmaker and after they receive my sympathy
and encouragement, I end up adding their name to the list of my
worries... If they are time-bombs, then they are in my urgent list.
It does not make sense! There are numerous popular websites that
officially designed for matchmaking and there are again numerous other
social networking sites that unofficially help the singles to search
for their future spouses. Of course, there are many side effects and
problems related to finding love through Internet... Misrepresentation
that may lead to great disappointment, deception that may end up in
horror, loss of privacy that may turn parties to fancy shops with neon
lights on time square, the dizzying abundance that generate hundreds
of attractive candidates, addiction and greed that creates a market
where people are as disposable as a pair of socks or pieces of
paper...
So, I understand why still many decent people and professionals have
hard time finding a suitable partner to marry and why they want my
help... Since, I was myself let to discover my wife through a light
version of matchmaking in Arizona; I decided to improve the list of
single men and women who are looking for a serious relationship.
