Dear Folks,
On March 24, 2015 I soaked several Roselle seeds, put into Jiffy Pellets on March 27th and they were up and planted out on April 8th. On December 6, 2015 I harvested mature 1st Generation seed, ready for storage and replanting next spring.
I am so pleased. This plant, a member of the Hisbiscus family
(Hibiscus sabdariffa), known also as "Sorrell" (not to be confused with the green lettuce/herb) and Flor de Jamaica is a real keeper of a plant and should be part of your garden if you have a sunny spot with room (the plant got about 4 feet across and about 5 feet tall). You can harvest leaves in the early months (not too many because you want to have lots of energy going into flower and 'fruit' production) for your table - some cultures pickle them. Then comes time to harvest flowers - they each last a day Then the "fruit" - the enlarged flower calyx - super Vitamin C and other antioxidant tangy addition fresh to your salads, making drinks and cooking with.
So 8 months of growing, harvesting and enjoyment - did I mention the plant is drop-dead gorgeous throughout its growing time! What a return on investment!
