You see a coyote, now what? Coyotes are used to the sights and sounds of city life. They move about to seek the resources they need, both during the night and the day. Here’s how you can stay safe around coyotes in the city:
When you see a coyote, leave the area and/or “haze”!
-
Leave the Area: Walk away from the coyote. Keep moving, but don’t run
-
“Haze”: Clap your hands, stomp your feet, wave your arms, yell, and toss something in the coyote’s direction to startle and frighten them away. Keep hazing until the coyote leaves.
In some instances, hazing will not work. Hazing is not effective when the coyote is protecting their den and/or puppies. In these instances, it is best to avoid the area completely.
If a coyote comes near you and your dog:
-
Keep your dog leashed.
-
Pick up small dogs and carry them.
-
Keep moving slowly away from the coyote. Don’t run.
-
Change direction and take another route.
To learn more or to report coyote activity, visit the SF Animal Control and Care (ACC) website HERE. For animal emergencies, call ACC’s emergency dispatch line at 415-554-9400 (hours: 6am – 12am). |
🚉🚥J Church Updates: New Boarding Islands and Flashing Beacons Make San Jose Ave Safer
-
As part of the J Church Safety and Accessibility Project, SFMTA has added flashing beacons on San Jose Ave at the Paulding St and San Juan Ave intersections. These beacons help make people who are walking safer at intersections by making them more visible. Learn more in the project update here.
-
As soon as the week of April 6, 2026, we will begin work at other locations along San Jose Avenue. The boarding island at Santa Ynez Avenue (J Church line) will be extended to provide more space off the street for riders waiting to board or disembark from the train. The work is expected to last about 6 weeks in total. No on-street parking spaces will be removed.
-
Additionally, a wheelchair accessible transit island will be constructed at Geneva and San Jose avenues, as well as at Niagara and San Jose avenues (M Ocean View). This will provide more accessibility for riders at the start and end of a highly used transit line. It is also important to note that there will be no new parking removal changes, something that is important to the residents and businesses in the immediate area.
-
Please visit the project webpage for the combined transit and safety improvements for this new stage of upgrades.
📋🚇Share your thoughts on how San Francisco’s transportation dollars are spent
-
The Transportation Authority (TA) wants to hear from you for their update to theSan Francisco Transportation Plan 2050, the 30-year blueprint for the city’s transportation system development and investment. During this round of community outreach, the TA will focus on the Vision Plan, which will shape how transportation investments will improve economic vitality, safety and livability, transportation equity, and sustainability.
-
Attend a virtual town hall. Interpretation will be available in Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino
-
Complete the online survey (open through May 15)
