Hello everybody--
please accept my apologies for being slow to respond to emails in recent
weeks. The main reason for this has been that I was busy implementing a new
module in Eden, called "MED".
The MED module supports the workflow coordination and documentation of medical
assistance at forward treatment points, such as staging areas, field clinics or
medical support stations in emergency shelters with exactly one patient flow
and two possible end-points (immediate discharge or onward transfer).
The general workflow includes:
- initial registration on arrival, including reason for admission, triage
priority, contamination hazards
- capture of medical background data
- documentation of prescriptions (medication) and vaccinations
- vital signs assessment with automatic risk stratification
- patient status reports (SBAR-structured)
- reporting/management of treatment measures
- epicrisis report
- transfer planning and dispatch
Patient records also allow for the upload of relevant documents or images.
The module is primarily directed at medically trained personnel (such as
physicians, nurses, or paramedics), but also supports integration with
administrative units and supply chain - and can provide statistics with
relevance for e.g. disease outbreak detection/management.
---
The MED module is designed with simplicity in mind, and intended for rapid
roll-out without training phase, with very little differentiation of work
(typically fewer than 5 roles) and flat responsibility distribution. Like I
wrote above, it supports exactly one patient flow with two possible end-points,
and is therefore not suited for complex clinical settings with many
interacting flows and processes.
It is explicitly not intended to serve as a primary source of medically
validated findings, diagnoses or prescriptions - so it cannot and will not be
developed to provide a full-blown patient data management (however, it could
be developed to interact/integrate with such systems, e.g. through HL7
interfaces).
---
The MED module is still under heavy development - however, it has passed a
first UAT session within the MRCMS template, and will initally be focused on
that context. A first production roll-out may still be a couple of weeks away,
though.
It is being developed in consultation with subject matter experts, and
obviously it also helps that I myself have a medical background.
---
At the current stage of development, the module has not yet been added to the
default template - but it can be seen integrated and fully functional in the
MRCMS template. If anyone is interested in a demo, feel free to contact me.
