Subject: FW: Rhodes,
Marshall, Mitchell and Churchill Scholarships-- application Fall
2010
Subject: Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell and Churchill
Scholarships
Dear Colleagues: I know you have some stellar and
extraordinary students with one year left at UCLA
or students who have
recently
graduated . If any of these would
benefit from and contribute to study for one or two years in England/UK on a
British Marshall or a Rhodes Scholarship; or for
one year on a Churchill Scholarship
(sciences and Engineering only); or study in Ireland for one
year on a Mitchell Scholarship,
do put them in contact with me or with Director of Counseling Alison
Nickerson. These are extraordinarily
prestigious and lucrative scholarships. The campus deadlines
for nomination for these
scholarships this year are in mid September (application September 20 10 for graduate study begining Fall 20 11).
It is essential that scholars begin this process early. We already
have some excellent prospects. Let's add to them. Please assess your
finest students and leaders and
encourage likely candidates to email me at gjwi...@college.ucla.edu and
Alison at ali...@college.ucla.edu They
should also check out National Scholarships on the Honors website
http://www. honors.ucla.edu
We shall explain to students the process of institutional
nomination and assist candidates with their applications. I encourage you to forward this email to faculty and
others in your departments who work with students. With best regards, Jennifer
W.

- SEE College Prep: Now Recruiting Volunteer Tutors for the Summer -
- About SEE College Prep -
SEE College Prep is the largest
non-profit organization focused on SAT preparation in California, and
the second largest in the United States. SEE trains top undergraduates
to deliver quality summer SAT preparation programs to disadvantaged high
school students. We have created a 5-week, 42-hour program and
curriculum to be implemented through partnerships with currently
existing college preparation programs that lack the resources to fully
prepare their students for college. Since the creation of this summer
program, SEE has served more than 500 educationally disadvantaged high
school students and has helped students to improve their SAT scores by
an average of 240 points, eliminating nearly 90% of the gap between the
richest and poorest students and helping to prove, once and for all,
that all students can succeed if given the opportunity. This summer we
will expand to serve more than 600 students at 20 program sites across
California.

Position
Description -
The SEE College Prep Summer Tutor is a volunteer summer
position. Tutors must fulfill two roles: 1) commit 4-8 hours per week
for a total of 5 weeks to lead small group sessions and 2) serve as
mentors and role models for deserving students from low-income families.
The curriculum is set, and Tutors will be leading small group sessions
2-4 hours per day during the week. Responsibilities as a volunteer Tutor
include, but are not limited to, coordinating schedules for meetings
and training with the site Project Director and attending volunteer
training sessions. Volunteers are expected to work 4-8 hours per week
Monday-Thursday, with each workday consisting of approximately 2 hours
of leading small group sessions, 1 hour of preparation work, and 1.5
