Hey everyone,

I'm sure you all will agree, today's discussion was truly mobilizing and empowering. I know I was significantly affected by it.

Along with what we talked about today, I think the process of personal transformation in this class as well as getting involved in something meaningful and fulfilling are essential. Throughout the course of this school year, I have been developing the concept for a club called the Student Leader Advocates of Music (SLAM!), through which to mobilize UCLA students to engage with local under-served high school students and organize after school music programs. I recognize that this by no means seeks to effect structural changes in the education system; though I also recognize that each of us, at least for the time being, must do what we can to effect changes in our immediate surroundings. This is how I've chosen to do so.

Given your passion and newfound understanding of the concepts in this class, I would be thrilled to involve all of you, regardless of your experience in music, in contributing to this cause. As I mentioned, we're looking for people with passion and commitment, not necessarily experience.

Tomorrow night at 8pm in Kerckhoff Grand Salon, SLAM! will be hosting its second quarterly SLAM! Concert, featuring a variety of student groups, including Awaken a Cappella, the UCLA Marching Band, Fusion, and many others. We will also be hosting the President of the American Music Conference, who will talk about the importance of advocacy for music education in our schools. I will end the evening with a presentation about SLAM! and how to get involved. You can check out the facebook page here. I hope you all can attend.

If any of the above sounds intriguing, please let me know. And even if not, I'd love to hear from you.

All the best,

Roi Matalon
