M.E.N.T.E, or Mentors Empowering and Nurturing Through Education is a student founded organization and future non-profit created by Laura Romo, a senior at UCLA and Felipe Hernandez, a senior at UCI. MENTE currently has two working branches, one at UCLA and one at UCI. MENTE at UCLA is working to empower youth at Locke High School # 1 while MENTE at UCI is inputs their enthusiasm at the Mendez Learning Center in Los Angeles.
Excited to increase the number of students persisting through higher education, M.E.N.T.E at UCLA is in search of enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to work with youth at Locke 1 and mentor them so they become familiar with the college going culture. The commitment is attending Locke High School on Fridays beginning October 7th from 3pm-5pm. (Vanpools will leave campus at 2:30pm). M.E.N.T.E is also planning to provide 2 Saturday academies where students sit down and fill out their college applications and learn about majors and careers they may pursue. Finally, MENTE hopes to provide a community service event for the Youth at Locke High School on December 10th. We are also looking to provide students with a scholarship opportunity.
Please Join MENTE on Tuesday September 27th for our first information meeting. General body meetings will take place on Tuesdays from 6-7pm in Royce 169. Please see attached for the program application. The purpose of this application is to help the M.E.N.T.E Board pair you up with an adequate mentee whom you will keep close contact with throughout the school year.
