Hi,

Is there some reason for all the fishmongers in Edinburgh to be shut on
a Monday? When I say all, I mean all 4 of the ones I've tried so far.
Does anybody know of one that *is* open today? I need to find whole
crabs - but not having much luck at the moment - and I'm guessing GoGS
isn't going to be much help here :-)

Thanks

Fishmongers were generally shut on a Monday as fishing boats
didn't land on a Sunday (consequently the fish markets tended
not to be open) and the fish wouldn't be fresh, in these days of
freezers etc. I wonder how much is needed and how
much is tradition.
Think the only 'fishmongers' that will be open today are the
instore ones whether or not you will get whole crabs there is
anyone's guess

why Leith in particular? :-)

How about trying M&S - they probably won't be cheap, but more likely to have
them than, say, Tesco.

Do fishmongers mong fish?

I love to go to the playground and watch the children jumping up and down.

It's supposed to be bad luck to fish on a Sunday, that's why many of them
don't go out... Therefore, no fresh fish on the Monday.

Strange I had this conversation about fishmongers closing on Mondays with my
wife when we were out today. There seems to be no need for it nowadays.
Though I guess the fishmongers deserve a five day week like anyone else. We
normally go to Richard Bee on Leith Walk, although officially closed he is
there preparing fish for the restaurants he supplies. He has said that if we
want anything on a Monday just to chap on the door.

Yes they do. But only fish.
Monger - Origin: Old English *mangere*, from *mangian* "to traffic", of
Germanic origin, based on Latin *mango* "dealer".

It's the traditional test for a good fishmonger in Scotland. No catch
on a Sunday, so no fresh fish on a Monday. "Never use a fishmonger
which opens on a Monday" is still good advice.
