Hi - I'm trying to find a source for a particular Christmas
present somewhere in Edinburgh.

What I'm looking for is one of those 'do-it-yourself' style
tapestries. You get a sort of canvas filled with holes and a
selection of coloured wool. There's a picture on the canvas
and the idea is to thread the wool through the holes to make
that picture.

I don't think I explained that very well, but hopefully
someone will know what I'm talking about and suggest
somewhere that sells them. Ideally I'm looking for a
tapestry of an Edinburgh scene - the castle, or whatever.

Many thanks in advance,

Alistair.

Many thanks for the tip, John. However, I actually went into
Past Times on Saturday but didn't see what I was looking for.

Any other suggestions?

A similar sort of thing to what you want would be a "cross-stitch kit"
which are like mini-tapestries. Also the picture is on a separate sheet
of paper rather than actually printed on the cloth, making it bit more
tricky. My mate Neil flogs these things so if you want to know how to
get hold of one I suggest you email him on:

What about "Past Times" (if that is what it is called). Do they not
have a shop in Frederick Street or Hanover Street?

etc

Have you tried Jenners (far end of lower ground floor) or John Lewis?
There's also the Embroidery Shop, 51 William St, 225 8642.
There used to be an embroidery shop down West Bow which had exactly what
you are looking for - painted canvas tapestry kits with Edinburgh
scenes - but it is no more. However I've seen the same kits elsewhere and you
should be able to find something similar at one of the places above.

john lewis have this kind of think, i think (they certainly used
to sell the canvas, if not the kits).

Try the sewing departments in Jenners (downstairs) or John Lewis
(ground floor). They both sell tapestry kits, and they also sell
some printed canvases and the tapestry wool separately. But fear not,
they have sales assistants who know everything about sewing and will
no doubt be able to tell you what you need...

Go to the sewing departments in Jenners or John Lewis. They both sell
tapestry kits, and they also sell printed canvases and the tapestry
wool, needles etc separately. And fear not, they have sales assistants
who know all about sewing and will be able to advise.... Jenners are
more likely to have Edinburgh-based pictures.

John Lewis's fabric department, Jenner's ditto, or the needlework shop in
William Street. The embroidery shop in Linlithgow is probably a bit better
than any of these.

Many thanks to everyone who's responded to my plea. To
summarise, it seems that the following are good places
for 'needlepoint', as it's apparently called! :)

John Lewis, St. James Centre (ground floor)
Jenners (basement)
The Embroidery Shop, William Street
a shop on the bottom half of the Royal Mile

I'll give these places a try at the weekend.

Cheers,

Alistair.

Try John Lewis - they appear to sell nearly everything there is to sell. :)

The National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street has a shop. They have a
tapestry kit for an Edinburgh scene. It measures about 28inches by
14inches and uses wool (supplied).

Excuse me for kibitzing from the other side of the central belt...

Past Times have a catalogue; when I asked in the Glasgow branch for an item
from the catalogue that they didn't have on display, it turned out they had
some, but hadn't had time to get them out of the stock room. They do
certainly have a d-i-y tapestry kit of some kind, I remember seeing one,
though whether it's the style you want, I couldn't say.

I'd also suggest looking in yellow pages, under something like
needlecraft. It seems inconceivable to me that there wouldn't
be several places in Ed. that would have that kind of thing.
