Schools need to decide if the iPads will be student or school managed.
Are the iPads to be shared or 1:1. These 2 decisions will lead to
completely different use of the iPads. With student managed and 1:1
you get the full benefit of mobile learning and self directed
learning. The shared school managed iPads give some of the benefits
but miss out on the self directed learning. Imagine students searching
for an app to help with their learning, finding it and then sharing.
The learning is huge and there is the buzz!

On the downside the inappropriate apps that can be downloaded can
present a challenge for the admin and teachers. Losing control of what
app are on the IPads can be daunting but needs to be thought of in the
same way as when students bring their own pencils and textas to
school, not the prescribed ones.

24/7 access is also a necessary condition to allow self directed
learning to occur whenever and where ever. Also -Who pays for the
apps? Who owns the apps? Will apps be a constant cost and for who?

The best apps allow students to create and then share with others.

Thanks Jenny I am leaning towards student owned and managed in a high
school situation because of these concerns. I am interested in hearing
how the financial management has happened at different schools and
also about any ebook texts that people are using too. Thanks for you

For sharing eBooks between teacher laptop and student iPads, I'm
playing with a program called Calibre and the Stanza app. It works a
treat over my home network, but yet to test it on school wifi.

Sounds great Melissa Will give that one a look I am also looking for
examples of school documentation for parents and staff as we start to
develop our plans. What high school texts are available as ebooks.
regards Sue
