The fastest way to convert a HEIC file to a JPG file on a Mac is with the built-in Preview app. If you think you will always want your photos to be in JPG format, you can change the image default from HEIC to JPG. JPGs take a little more storage room, but they are very high-quality.
Here are the steps for how to convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac:

HEIC file is a raster image saved in the High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF). HEIC is a format that contains one or multiple HEIF image sequences. Apple Inc. announced that it was replacing JPEG files with this new image format. It has a more advanced and modern compression algorithm which allows digital photographs to be taken in smaller file sizes, and retain much higher image quality than JPEGs.
JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg. file extension) stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, named after a committee of developers who created it. It has become the standard image format nowadays due to its compression capability. It is still a popular image format over the web, commonly used for photographs and other image types.
The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format was designed to replace the older and simpler GIF format and, to some extent, the much more complex TIFF format. PNG is an open file format for the lossless storage of raster images. PNG provides a patent-free replacement for GIF and can also replace many common uses of TIFF. Indexed-color, grayscale, and truecolor images are supported, plus an optional alpha channel for transparency.
This appears to be some format that Apple is pushing on me, but at this point it's an obstacle. Moreover, I never asked for my photo downloads to land as HEIC format. I don't want that. I never want my photos in HEIC format; I want them in JPEG or PNG. Maybe I fat-fingered some setting? Maybe it's a consequence of the latest iOS? This also happened a couple of years ago and I don't remember what I did to fix it.
What's the easiest way to make this not happen? Ideally I would like to just change a setting on my phone or possibly iCloud/photos, but if I have to, I will look into a converter that isn't a hassle to use (for example, GIMP is hard no; maybe ImageMagick if there's only one or two arguments).
The second part is about never getting photos in HEIC format. Sounds like you're using an iOS device. On iOS 17, go to Settings > Camera > Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". That will always use JPEG/H.264 formats, with limitations on fps for hi-res videos.
If you've already downloaded them, you can convert them in Windows. Windows 10 and 11 supports HEIC/HEIF images if HEIF Image Extensions, provided by Microsoft, is installed from the Windows Store. Once that's installed, HEIC will open in Windows Preview.

Manual photo uploads in the IOS environment conversion: FROM heic----> TO jpg. It is great that Dropbox can be enabled as an IOS app choice in the IOS environment to save photos (Google Photos seems blocked as a selection app) from numerous sources eg messages, emails, facebook ect. BUT many IOS users are creating and sharing photos in the *.heic format. As great as it seems my dynamic link to my Nixplay photo frame from Dropbox, unfortunately Nixplay frames will only accept uploads in the jpg format. Unless I'm being technically challenged, I can't seem to get manual uploads to either prompt for upload in jpg format or change manual uploads to jpg (from HEIC) by default in settings. I can however convert manually once uploaded to Dropbox but that extra step is easily overlooked when various family members are uploading to the same directory in Dropbox. A settings default would be great or maybe even better if the current settings for the camera roll automation could be extended to manual uploads in the camera uploads directory.
HOLD ON...............I just went into my Dropbox via my Win10 desktop in a browser and found a "save as" within the "Camera Uploads" directory on the latest test upload photo. Upon changing the heic to a jpg file on the "..."menu just uploaded photo I got a pop up with the choice to set this folder/directory to automate the conversion to jpg. YIPEEEEE & thanks; sorry about the user error/ignorance. I still can't find that setting for the folder/directory anywhere in settings but my later test upload WORKED automatically!! Worked too well maybe as it changed to both jpg and jpeg. If I may suggest change vs adding as still need to clean up the old heic file which maybe by design but I'll take it and do mass cleanups periodically as a welcome workaround.........
Surprisingly, the photos taken on my iPhone 13 Pro are saved in .heic format when I connected it to my Windows 11 PC and plan to edit some of them in Photoshop. I have roughly 1000 images on iPhone and would love to learn a fast way to bulk convert .heic to jpg on my PC.

However, instead of importing your photos as HEIC and then converting them on your PC, you should be able to import them directly as JPG (having the phone convert them upon transfer). For this, change the settings on the iPhone. I have it in French but in English the option in the camera settings should be named something like "Transfer to Mac or PC" and then a choice between Original file (=HEIC) and Automatic (=HEIC when transferring to a Mac and JPG in other cases).
So, I recently got myself one of those fancy new iPhones, and it comes with this nifty HEIC photo format. It's all cool for saving space, but when it comes to sharing pics with friends who aren't on Team Apple, well, that's a bit of a pickle.
