Ihave always been interested in the martial arts, but never had the opportunity to pursue any formal training. Shortly after my son began taking classes I decided to join in the fun! This was almost three years ago and training has me in the best shape of my life. It has been very beneficial for my overall well being and a great activity to spend time with my son. Sensei Groesbeck and staff are top notch instructors and provide a positive and fun environment in which to learn and train.

My 12 year old daughter and 11 year old son are 1st degree black belts training for their 2nd Degrees. I am 43 years old, in the best shape of my life and ready to test for my 1st degree Black Belt. Impact Martial Arts has changed the life of my children and I for the better in a dramatic way! Modesty, Courtesy, Integrity, Self Control, Perseverance and Indomitable Spirit! These are the creeds instilled in the students who study at the Team Manlius dojo of Impact Martial Arts. The entire teaching staff at the Team Manlius dojo: Sensei Groesbeck, Sensei Button, Deshi Mehmedovic and Mr. McDonald are all AWESOME!! They are all very engaging, professional and inspiring. Not only do they teach marital arts and physical fitness but the curriculum also contains character education and anti-bullying strategies. The environment at the dojo is always positive, fun and inspiriting. Believe me it is a place you will want to be and your kids to be!!!

Our son, Lorenzo, has been training in martial arts with Team Manlius since he was 3 years old. He is now 10 and will be recieving his first degree black belt in 3 weeks. His sense of pride , respect, and confidence is very evident. Impact Martial Arts has become his second home. His mentors, Sensei Groesbeck and Sensei Button, have truly been extraordinary, not only in teaching our son martial arts, but also in instilling a sense of pride in himself that we as parents may not have been able to achieve on our own. Not once in 7 years has our son ever said he does not want to go to a martial arts class. He absolutely loves his dojo and his instructors. By far, placing Lorenzo in this dojo is more than likely the best decision we have ever made as parents. We are very grateful to sensei Groesbeck and sensei Button for all the time and effort they put into their dojo to assure that their students grow up to be successful , respectful, and confident adults.

Both my sons train at the Manlius Impact Martial Arts School. It is a fantastic learning environment, supporting both mental and physical growth. The training program has helped them become more disciplined, respectful and confident. I have the utmost respect for Sensei Groesbeck, Sensei Button and all the staff at the Manlius dojo.

All that said, martial arts are still excellent supplementary training to have under your belt (especially a black one). Each style I recommend below has a lot to offer, whether more traditional or more mixed martial arts. But if your goal is to learn how to defend yourself in real life situations, choose your martial arts style wisely, be aware of its shortcomings, and make sure you round out your training with other self defense skills. Otherwise, you may well still find yourself unprepared and frozen when faced with real life threats. So take all of these recommendations below with a grain of salt, and make sure you get a wide breadth of experience.

The other thing I love about Krav Maga is its training environment. Krav Maga classes are often practiced in street clothes without gloves or padding. This is to help simulate what a real fight would feel like, so you can better prepare your body for those conditions. I use this same philosophy in my own Tough Cookie Self Defense Course. You want to practice your self defense skills in as realistic a setting as possible, with as much full force and adrenaline as you can, so your muscles can memorize performing these moves under the worst case scenarios.

Let me show you the way of Tough Cookie Self Defense, including how you can take the moves from all of these best martial arts for self defense above and incorporate them into a holistic and realistic self defense system that teaches you how to fight back like the powerful woman you are!
