The Undial is an oblique free-standing sundial. Sunlight passes through a cylindrical lens, and the shadow cast onto the table displays the current time of day. Undial is an unassuming object which serves to visualize the passage of time throughout the day. The combination of science and high-design results in a kind of solar powered magic. Designer Atsuhiro Hayashi decided to name this elegant object Undial because it performs the function of a sundial without the dial.

For centuries sundials have been the silent timekeepers in gardens around the world. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of the slow passage of time with one of our high quality precision made brass sundials. All are made to commission only and whether your requirements are traditional or contemporary we guarantee you an enchanting sundial to enhance and enrich any garden.

Proprietor Keith Bunting designs and makes the sundials himself and works mainly in brass. His aim is to provide you with workmanship of the finest quality, designed specifically for you. He designs, calculates and engineers each and every sundial so that you end up with exactly what you want - a unique handmade timepiece to mark the passing hours.

So I realized that the symbol at the top of the center mural looks a lot like the lost god of time's sundial, and went over some other things in the mural in this thread: _Impact/comments/kjfrxo/the_unfinished_mural_in_the_entombed_palace_the/

I have my waypoint here to come get crabs and it struck me that I'd just seen the same layout not too long ago. The sundial is identical, and it's hard to tell where the arrow is pointing but when looking at the map standing directly behind it, I'm pointing towards Stormterror's Lair, and Celestia is right beyond that on the map according to sight lines.

InteractiveSundials are the oldest known instruments for telling time. The surface of a sundial has markings for each hour of daylight. As the Sun moves across the sky, another part of the sundial casts a shadow on these markings. The position of the shadow shows what time it is.

You may order a completed custom-made sundial made for shipment anywhere, or you can order just the sundial design drawing so that you can make your own sundial using the drawings and instructions we send you. Designs and finished dials are unique commissioned works based on the latitude, longitude and the position of the sundial, and each customer's particular tastes and requirements. You get to select your sundial type, shape, size, artwork, inscriptions, and extra options like gold-plating or gold leaf. Don't worry, I will walk you through the simple ordering and design process. Just contact me, and we will discuss your sundial specifications at no charge. When we know your desired sundial specifications, we will send you an Order Form for your approval and deposit. Sample copies of an Order Form are available upon request. We will not make your sundial until you approve the final design. Often we make several design changes until everybody is happy. Designing the sundial is half the fun!

If you don't know what kind of a sundial you want, I'll help you decide by showing you sample graphics and photos to choose from. Just contact me. People love visiting my sundial studio to personally discuss their orders and to see my demo dials. But usually we just use email and/or the phone. Meanwhile, before we talk, I suggest that you look at the Sundial Photos page on this website which will give you an idea of the many types of sundials I make. The Sundial Artwork page shows you artwork on my previous sundials, and there is a Sundial Artwork CatalogRequires Adobe Acrobat Reader you can download too. Or we can use your own artwork or photos if you prefer.

Because all our sundials are so different with so many customizable options, it is impossible to have set fixed pricing. We individually price each project based on its size, materials and complexity. Generally, the larger and more complex the sundial is, the more expensive it is. We can tell you this: 26 inch stone sundials range from $1,900 to $3,200 (USD), and sundial design order prices start at $600 (USD). You pay nothing until you approve the Order Form with our price quote. The price includes free consultation by email or phone, a copy of the very informative Sundial Owner's Manual, and a weather-resistant copy of The Equation of Time. On-site consulting, crating and shipping are extra. Delivery and installation is free in Tucson. You will need to provide your own sundial support pedestal for stone sundials, easily found at local fountain or garden centers. Or, you can custom-make your own.

After we have thoroughly discussed your sundial design and finalized your Order Form, Sundial Sculptures must receive your payment before I begin making the drawings. I will send you a precise drawing of your sundial for your inspection and approval before I begin sundial construction. Sundial Sculptures will return your payment only in the unlikely event that we are unable to complete your order. Please do not send any payment until you have discussed and finalized your order with John Carmichael.

We will deliver and install most sundials in Tucson at no charge and in Phoenix for $300 (USD). If you live elsewhere, you may arrange your own sundial shipping or let our recommended trusted shipping agent charge you the going rate for packing, shipping and insurance. You can easily install your own sundial by following the supplied instructions, and I'm always available by phone or email to help you if you need me.

Depending on how many orders are on the waiting list and the type of sundial you order, the completion date for finished sundials will be at least six weeks or more from the date we receive your deposit. Sundial designs usually take at least two weeks. We will give you a rough estimate of the completion date when you place your order.

Librarians, historians, gardeners, the city arborist and a host of others around Portland have been involved in a nearly year-long search for a sundial, that ancient timepiece supplanted by the clock several hundred years ago.

Robert Kellogg, in town this week for the North American Sundial Society convention, will talk about sundial principles and how to make one on a 3-D printer. Reservations, which can be made at the library or by calling 871-1700 x708, are suggested.

Most of the talks and events during the North American Sundial Society convention will be for registered attendees only. But members will be visiting several local sundials of interest while in Maine. Here are some to visit to see local incarnations of this ancient time-telling device:

Society members reached out to Portlanders last August, hoping that if they put the word out early, the vaunted Crehore sundial might be found before the clock metaphorically struck midnight. So far, emails, record searches and phone calls have not cast any light on the sundial mystery. No one seems to know where it was, or is, in Portland.

When Aubert wanted to get people in Portland looking for the Crehore sundial, he began last August by reaching out to the Portland Public Library. He was connected with Samantha Duckworth, a reference librarian who specializes in science and technology questions.

Though most us think of sundials as garden decorations, society members see them as a fascinating way to tell time using the most basic materials, along with a strong understanding and appreciation of how the solar system works.Advertisement

In Europe, you can still find public sundials set up to tell time, not as memorials to a civic hero, Aubert said. Even when clocks became common, lots of people felt the only way to accurately set their clock was to check it against a sundial. That practice continued into the 1800s, he said.

During his discussions with Isozaki, Eisner coined the term "entertainment architecture" to convey what the company was looking for in many of its new buildings being planned or under construction at the time. Isozaki, probably desiring to capture the sunny essence of the sunshine state, designed a very large, colorful, and dramatic sundial to rise up out of the center of the new office building. Apart from its large size, the design of the dial itself is rather unique among the dials of the world, which date back at least to ancient Egypt.

At the beginning of the project, Steve Weiner, a Disney Development Company employee in charge of planning much of Disney's numerous construction projects in Florida, contacted the Florida Solar Energy Center for advice and assistance on the technical aspects of the large sundial. Before putting millions of dollars into this new work of art with a function, he wanted to make sure that it would work as anticipated. Assistance also was needed to determine precisely where and how to lay out the hour and other markings on the sundial.

Dr. Ross McCluney, Principal Research Scientist at the Florida Solar Energy Center, was assigned to discuss the project with the architects. He met with Hisa Ota, an architect from New York on Isozaki's staff, in the downtown Orlando offices of Hunton, Brady, Pryor, and Masow, the local firm hired to look after the project. This meeting was held on October 18, 1987 to discuss the design. As soon as McCluney realized the large scale of the project, and that the shadows of the sundial's pointer, called a gnomon, would sometimes be cast over a distance as great as 130 feet, he said, "you know the shadows will be fuzzy don't you."

In the meantime, McCluney analyzed the geometry of the sundial, preparing numerous drawings and equations, working to figure out how to calculate the coordinates of all the markings targeted for the wall and floor of the huge courtyard in the Team Disney building which forms the sundial. In addition, the 4.83 degree angle of the north wall was adjusted slightly before construction, as a result of his more accurate calculations.
