Hello!
I know of the numerous discussions whether it is okay to store OTP-data together with the static passwords used for a service. Bitwarden offers this possibility.
May I propose to implement an option to either add a simple password or PIN check before showing or copying OTP values or -even better- to encrypt the OTP secrets with a different key in the database?
I am aware this would not solve the concerns some people arise, but it could mitigate them.
Tanks!

For high value information (crypto seeds which should never be electronic, of course, but just an example of high value info); banking and CC access; main email access as people forget that you can reset most passwords once a hacker gains access to your email account; OTP/2FA keys that you want to segregate from your password (good example for this proposal).

The other solution, of course, is to set a second free Bitwarden account (or different password manager) that only contains your critical info and leave your main account for your low risk accounts and info. You can even set it up under a separate email account or general email account sub-address (e.g. mye...@gmail.com vs myemail+...@gmail.com) greater security by reducing phishing of known email addresses.

Here on this page, we are about to discuss another way to help. It is to create a password protected folder and save confidential files inside, keeping prying eyes away. Let's get started to learn how to do so by following the complete guide here.

EaseUS LockMyFile enables all Windows users to add password protection to their folders and files in a local disk, an external drive, even a network shared drive. Let's move to add a password to your folder with essential files here:

Folder Lock is another third-party software that works to adding a password to protect a folder. It mainly offers solutions to protect files, backup files, and even protect external USB on Windows computers.

Now, you've complete adding a password to your folder. It's time to delete the original folder. As some of the methods were encryption tools that will generate a new encrypted file, so you'll need to remove the old source file permanently.

I have got a folder that contains private stuff and I don't want others to be able to see its content. I will frequently open it and the folder is quite large. I know I can password protect it by encrypting or compressing, but then the loading time is quite long and it is inconvenient. I don't care the content being disclose, so there is no point in encrypting it. All I need is just to hide it.

That way, no normal user (except your user account!) can enter the directory. They will still be able to see the folder from the outside, but they neither can open it to list its content nor can anybody open files inside it, even if they know the full path and name.

However, when you are logged in and walk away, there is no protection, as this does not affect your own account. You can also decline your own account any permission (set to 000 then), but this can be reverted from your account without password, if one knows how to do so.

To access your folder anyway, you would then have to be root, which requires one to be logged in with an admin account and to use gksu/gksudo to open a file manager or media viewers like Nautilus and VLC. This however prompts you again for your admin account password, so you are protected from anybody who is no admin and can not become root.

Additionally I should mention that one with enough experience and physical access to the machine can also boot it in recovery mode and be root user without having to enter any password. But there is no more secure way unless you use encryption, which you explicitly said you do not want.

One solution can be creating a separate partition and add password for mountation. This way you can access that folder by just double clicking and entering the password. When you are done just click unmount, now no one can access that without password from ubuntu. However that partition is accessigble from different OS without password, so it has some vulnerabilities.

A "locked folder" can also mean a folder with files currently in use, but that's not the same idea as a folder you'd lock intentionally for privacy reasons. See How to Move, Delete, and Rename Locked Files for more on how those files work.

One option is to right-click the folder and choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Disable Inheritance > Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object. Then select a user from the list > Edit > Show advanced permissions > Type > Deny > and check the box beside Delete.

To hide files and folders in Windows 10, right-click the folder and select Properties > General > Hidden > Apply > OK. While you can prevent hidden files from displaying by adjusting the File Explorer view, other users can easily show hidden items by changing this setting. A third-party tool to add password protection locks and hides folders more effectively.

I know this feature has been requested a number of times, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether or not the ability to password protect files and folders for sharing purposes is in the works? It appears to be a glaring omission to me, particularly as Adobe's vision for the Creative Cloud encompasses the corporate world, where security is obviously of great importance.

I have iCloud on a few PC's, iphones, etc. in different locations. I have folders on there that I would prefer be password protected (locked). Is there a way to lock/password protect just specific folders?

That way, even if someone manages to steal your data, it'll remain useless as it's locked and can only be opened with the correct password. Download WinZip Download WinZip to password-protect your files.

Important Note: You should remember or store your password in a safe place to encrypt your files. If you forget your password, recovering the protected files is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

After following these steps, your Excel file is now password-protected. You should also see it in the Info window, where you should see Protect Workbook: A password is required to open this workbook.

These steps ensure that only authorized users can open your Excel file. However, you must remember your password or keep a copy safely hidden away. If you forget your password or lose your copy, recovering your Excel file is almost impossible.

First, consider if you really need to. Your files in iCloud Drive are already encrypted. There's no way for Apple to read them and no way for anyone else to get to them without your iCloud password. You can see them on your Mac with your user account password and your iOS devices in the Files app, but that is protected by your passcode and/or Touch ID or Face ID. So think about how anyone else would get to see any of your files in iCloud Drive.

If you still think you need to put another layer of protection on those files, like maybe you have an assistant that also has access to your iCloud password, then you can do the same things you do with any files. Files and folders on iCloud drive are still just files and folders. You can put them in an encrypted zip file. You can also create a password protected disk image. See -ways-to-password-protect-files-on-your-mac.html You can also password-protect document inside of apps such as Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Microsoft Word, etc.

Hi Gary. Thanks for your timely answer! The reason I wanted to add further protection to my files/folders in iCloud drive is that I am a medical professional who keeps my patient's medical and payment data on my devices. Your suggestions we're extremely helpful. I didn't know that all the different file types (MS Excel, Word and even Preview files) can all be individually password protected. Now I can add a password to just my most important files in iCloud. Thanks again for your efforts!

When users forget the password, they will surely be locked and won't be able to access their locked files and data. On this page, in Part 1, you'll find 3 methods provided by professional users and geeks to unlock Folder Lock without the password.

"I locked one of the folders in my laptop (windows 10) by using a password-protected code. I just put the code on a notepad, create a folder, and locked it. It's a Windows batch file (cmd.exe). I have totally forgotten my password now and tried at least 30 times to open it. Unfortunately, the password was wrong and it didn't work.

Folder Lock, powerful software to safeguard vital data and files, sets password protection to selected files and folders on Windows PC. It allows users to hide files, encrypt files, and even securely delete files.

So now you can view, find and reuse your saved files in Folder Lock or folders again without any passwords. If you cannot find wanted files in the target folder, follow either method offered below to get your lost files back.

Welcome to the community and thanks for your first post in the forum!

Thanks for the detailed question! Check out this article about password protecting your files when using a shared link! That is the current feature of password protecting that Box has.

An option to password protect individual folders would be very useful, especially as permissions trickle down from parent folders; some organizations will want to restrict access to sub-folders to only certain employees or individuals in the organization.
