Good morning guys,

Good work Sibonga, you really are making waves!

I am in favour of Thoko's name suggestion "Sakhisizwe".

Secondly would everyone ensure that their minimum contributions are in the bank, and that any additional funds raised are also deposited into the group account.

Thanks Asanda for liasing with Rotaract with regard to the penpals.

We need to split up into two task teams to get faster progress on both sides, namely

1. Mentorship: which will co-ordinate and plan the "Career Day", and penpals relationship.

2.Study Material co-ordination: which will see how many books we have collected so far, funds available to buy and compare prices of book stores to buy from.

So please indicate which group you are interested in being in for the interim.

I think we need to do a tally of the items we have (money and books) by the end of the week so we know where to push hard.

Best regards,
Akholiwe Ngceba

Hi guys,

I think the slogan should be 'SAKHA ISIZWE',it might be over used but I think it suites the initiative.

Thanks,

Hi Sam and everyone

Thought I'd responded, but I see I didn't. Thanks for letting us know. From my side, I totally understand. We'll hear from you as to when you can help out with whatever. I'm going to check with Igshaan if you have to have signed that other document he forgot to get you sign to be properly deemed a trustee. Would you still like to be a trustee or would you rather not be one? What does everyone else think?

P.S Still waiting on responses to previous email.

Hi guys

Trust you've all been well. Perhaps this is somewhat unrelated,my apologies.

This is just to say that I've since moved to Johannesburg (from CT),given my demanding work and study schedule,my involvement in the group will be minimal i.e I will be doing what I can as and when it's possible.

I'm also cognisant of the fact that I'm one of trustees, that said I wouldn't want to hinder the smooth running of activities as it were. Therefore,I'd be glad to relinquish this 'position' if my minimal involvement would be a hinderance of any kind, please do not hesitate to inform me if this were the case.

I'm encouraged by the progress made thus far,I think its an extremely important initiative.

Wish you the best of everything guys!!

Warm regards :-)

Clarification: by "ready to put a logo together" I mean ready to design one. I'm going to talk to him about digitising it,etc.

Oh, and that slogan I suggested, or any slogan for that matter, doesn't have to be in English.

Hi all

Just an update; I called Pearson (what used to Maskew Millar Longman) and they asked me to send them an explanation of what we seek to do and how we would like them to help. The lady I spoke to there, Anthea Variend, said that they've got a huge backlog in orders for the Eastern Cape because schools and government went through their ordering process late. She said that they would look into how they can help us as soon as they've dealt with what's on their hands.

Onto the pen pal/career day; Asa how's it going with trying to find out if WSU and/or Rhodes University Rotaract teams would be willing to get involved in the pen pal programme? I've spoken to a company in East London, Siseko, that seeks to contribute to education. They said that they do things like career day, and could pull it off for us. Nothing has been finalised as yet, so we can't rest easy on the logistics around the career day. However, I've sent them questions around what it would take for them to pull it off, when they could do it, how much time they'd need for planning, and what they'd need from our side. I'm waiting on their response.

Onto group admin; we need a name, may we please get ideas. Some of my ideas; "Ibhongo" , "Libhongo" , "Bhongolethu" , "Ibhongo lethu" , "Bhongo lomzi" (umzi being umzi wakwaNtu). Someone threw "Vulindlela" at me. What do you guys think? We need to get these little things out the way, lest they hinder our processes just when we're ready to put everything together. Let's talk and share ideas.

We also need a group logo. What do you guys think about this. What image do you guys see when you apply your mind on what we are trying to do? I know someone who is ready and willing to put a logo together for us for free, he is literally waiting on my go ahead. I need ideas from you guys around what kind of image you think would best represent us. Let's discuss and share ideas so we can get moving. I thought of a slogan for us "Education has no expiry date". What do you guys think? Want to play around with it? Make your own suggestions, let's talk.

We need to decide on the structure of the group, i.e. roles. If we want to register as a PBO with SARS, this is imperative. We need to decide on all the roles; directors/ceo's,etc, project managers, logistics people, fundraisers (if we want to be specific about it, cause we can all be fundraisers), think tank (ideas people), media liaisons/spokespeople (when we need them), etc. We also need to decide on ownership of the ho amongst us will be take ownership of the group. We need to decide if ownership of the group goes to directors or whether it's going to work differently. This is all very important for our registration as a PBO.

Cosmas and I will be talking next week, I'll let you guys know what's happening as soon as he gets back to me. Once again, what's happening with the book collection in East London (Nozza) and Joburg (Nobusi)? Are there no questions for Igshaan at the bank. And, lastly, a reminder to all who can to deposit something into the group's bank account.

Subject: PROGRESS: Penpals& Mentorship, and Study material

Hi  All

I think Nobusi has been accidentally excluded from emails for a while now. Apologies for that Nobusi. I have forwarded the information with regard to what I think you missed.

I have a suggestion I would like to put forward with regard to the Mentorship and Penpals aspect.

Perhaps we can have varisity students who are penpals( eg Rotarct cub), we could introduce the children to a student at varisty who is studying something related to what they are interested in pursuing. Those who don't really know what they'd like to study then will be placed with a random student. Part two of it would be to host a career day at the school. This would be done early in the year ( if we go for that option then we need to get moving with that now). We could have a guidance teacher to come and give a general career guidance talk and introduction into aptitudes etc. We could have some young professionals from different fields to answer questions from the students.

What are your thoughts? We need responses by the end of the week so we can get moving.

Also have you guys all made the deposits into the bank account for your initial contributions. Also can you guys please be really active in collecting study material and fundraising as we are going into Mid-Feb now, and the deadline for delivery of the study material is end Feb. We saw that there is a dire need for this material thus should try to supply as much as we can.

I will be doing a tally after the 15th to see how far we are in terms material collection and funds available so that we know how far we can go in allocating study material.

Regards,
Akholiwe

Hi Tume,

A few days back you enquired about computers, I called the teacher to find out. She said that they have two but one is not working and the functional one is used for admin by the clerk. She said they don't have space to put them at the moment and went on to explain that there a few classrooms or unused rooms because the school was built my the community a long time ago. However if they would get computers with warning before they are handed over, the principle could make plan into building a secure structure for that purpose.

Good day all,

I am in agreement with the suggestion of student to student, however we would need to incorporate an aspect of having one "adult" giving motivational workshop. The mentorship aspect was envisaged to have a career guidence aspect, and I think that could be overlooked if we just have agemates being penpals outside of 'seniors' . Perhaps that workshop could be done once way before exams for each 'class'. Eg maths and physics class, business class, history class. In relation to the subject choices made. I hope you get where I'm going with this.

Best regards,
Akholiwe

Hi All

In light of the concerns about the penpals i concur with
Sibongakonke. The idea of penpals i great but it is sensitive. Should we choose to take the option of connecting students with other students that too would need to be managed. But the latter idea seems more feasable after taking into account the mentioned concerns.

Hi all

Thoko suggested Sakhisizwe as a slogan, so we must just be clear on what we want as our name and what we want as our slogan. So what are the suggestions for a name and a slogan?

I'm for the splitting into two groups idea. So it would be nice to see people appoint themselves to the relevant group. Unfortunately, or fortunately (however you look at it), I've already started talking to people about both career day and text books so I'm in both and can't remove myself from one (if it's fine with everyone).

Could we please sort out roles, etc. I'm trying to get my uncle to help us with registering as a PBO with SARS, and he needs us to sort all of that out.

GOOD news: Cosmas is ready to rock and roll! We're going to meet some time and this week and get going.

Please don't forget to refer to my initial email and respond to my questions.

Hi guys

Sorry that I have not been as active as I have wanted with everything, just a lot of things are happening but in response to the names I do think names like Sakhisizwe and Masakhane (I know maybe they have been used a lot) but  are appropriate for what we are trying to achieve because this is not about us but making the lives of others better so that they could be able to better equip themselves as they go out into the world whether to further their studies or finding work.

We're getting 20 readers from Pearson! They're on the way to my place.

Cosmas and I are starting work next week.

Can we sort out all the other loose ends I've asked about in previous emails please?

Hi All,

Well done Sibonga!

With regard to your previous questions.

Logo and slogan and name:

I think we are all happy with "Sakh'isizwe" as suggested by Thoko as a slogan.
Logo, would it be possible to tell your friend what we are doing with regard to education and them ask them to suggest a logo, maybe give us two options then we say which is preferred. I think it will be difficult for us with limited artistic skills to design a logo. If people have suggestions they must make them, in the absense of such suggestions then I think its appropriate to ask your friend to get going with what he may have in mind. But run what he comes up with past the group to make the final choice.

I have no name suggestion, and so your suggestions are ok with me in the absense of new suggestions we will take them.

NPO status registration:
Roles: I think it will be difficult to have set roles for an undefined period, especially if they should mention names for the roles as the membership changes. I mentioned  roles in the Constitution but I don't know whether those were unsatisfactory to NPO registration.

I think you are doing a wonderful job and I think that you should feel free to make progressive decisions for the group (obviously in line with our mission/aim), as waiting for everyone to reply everytime you need to make a decision slow you down. You can just send us correspendence and let us make suggestions from time to time. Thats my suggestion because most people take a long time to reply and only a few reply. Perhaps have a shorter list of people involved that you need responses from.

iIf you feel differently about what I'm suggesting then please put forward a suggestion ladies and gents!

Best regards,
Akholiwe
