Dear EcoTypes collaborators, hello! The AESS Frameworks Project is gearing up for our 2023 AESS conference in Portland, OR, and EcoTypes will be a key part of the professional development workshop we offer (below). I've found in my own classes that EcoTypes helps students appreciate their personal environmental frameworks, as a point of departure to explore larger scholarly frameworks that inform environmental knowledge and action. Please consider participating in our 2023 AESS events, summarized below.

I have lots of updates on EcoTypes in preparation for the 2023-24 academic year, which I'll announce soon. For now, do take a moment and review some anticipated EcoTypes improvements in light of a wider circle of participants around the world.

Thank you, and feel free to be in touch if questions,

Jim

Dear colleagues, happy spring! You may recall that our AESS Frameworks Project launched at the 2022 Baltimore AESS conference; here's an overview. We invite you to participate in our 2023 Portland AESS conference sessions (below) as well. The sessions both take place on Wed July 12, the final day of the AESS conference...more time to further explore our beautiful Portland OR in July! Read on for details.
  • "What do you mean by frameworks??" Frameworks are the foundation of environmental knowledge and action; they are the conceptual heart of ESS. Our teaching, research, and activism build on frameworks. Attached are the results of a pilot survey some of you completed last August, including over 20 possible ESS frameworks. Does your work incorporate the best possible frameworks? Does your work strive for framework inclusivity? How might your work reconcile the many frameworks characterizing ESS? Our Frameworks Project is here to support you in exploring answers to these important questions.
  • "How can I learn more??" Come to our AESS 2023 Frameworks Project sessions!...no preparation necessary, just show up.
    • We will start with a professional development workshop on Wed Jul 12 8:30 - 11:45 am. The workshop offers instructors an opportunity to integrate environmental frameworks into their courses, under the guidance of Frameworks Project committee members. You may participate for 90 minutes during the first or second time slots, or for the full 180 minutes and work directly with a Frameworks Project committee member on your upcoming courses.
    • We then offer a discussion symposium on Wed Jul 12 3:00 - 4:15 pm. Following our popular session from AESS 2022, this session focuses on frameworks biographies, stressing the origin and impact of ideas that have shaped our lives and careers, yet pausing on undue praise or criticism. This non-judgmental approach models the sort of intellectual openness and honesty we all desire in our ESS community.
Please, if any questions or you wish to keep in the loop on AESS Frameworks Project opportunities, just be in touch with me and I'm happy to help.

See you at the 2023 AESS/ASLE conference in July!

Jim
