Dear colleagues, we have nearly 300 responses so far to our new
2022-23 EcoTypes survey. For those of you using the survey in your classes, your students may be interested in general results so far. [Remember from
Instructor FAQ that you may also receive anonymous results for your class only; this requires that we add an institutional dropdown code toward the end of the survey.]
See attached for a quick chart of the bottom line: respondent EcoTypes. Of the current
five prevalent EcoTypes, Earth Justice is the most common (37%), though there is some representation of all five. Though highly general, this quick table of Place, Knowledge, and Action means and standard deviations may suggest a bit of overall respondent sentiment captured via EcoTypes:
Theme | Avg | SD |
Place | -0.262 | 0.243 |
Knowledge | -0.004 | 0.280 |
Action | 0.159 | 0.296 |
The att'd chart also includes something new: the respondent *anti*EcoType—the EcoType farthest from their Place/Knowledge/Action centroid. We are using this antiEcoType as part of a customized followup
reflection form, and related interactive
COIL module (Navigating Difference), where students have an opportunity to consider how they approach difference—in this case, the EcoType they may *disagree* with the most.
If you look at the antiEcoType chart, you'll see Science Policy and Small Green Steps as the farthest EcoType from many respondents. You may wish to consider e.g. role plays in your classroom that build on these anti-EcoTypes, and/or the reflection form and COIL module, as ways your students might benefit. [They do not see their antiEcoType on their survey results—they only see it if they do the reflection form.]
These results by no means arise from some representative sample. Your students may wonder who is responding, and I cannot say for sure as the EcoTypes survey is anonymous. At bottom is a distribution table of the survey demographics and self-rated items your students may find useful to interpret the overall results.
Please feel free to be in touch if questions, and thank you for your participation.
Jim P.
