• Título: How Infrastructure Shapes Comparative Advantage
• Abstract: This paper provides evidence that domestic trade costs are a source of national comparative advantage. I build an international trade and internal geography model that can be used to evaluate the impact of any road on the composition of the exports of a country. The framework includes multiple international shipping routes and input-output linkages. I use the model to simulate how an important road project, Ruta del Sol, impacts the comparative advantage of Colombia, a nation with high domestic trade costs and large concentration of exports in mining. This road improves the access to global markets for both mining and manufacturing regions. To quantify the model and estimate its parameters, I use customs records, input- output tables, a transportation survey, and geospatial data. Results suggest that Ruta del Sol would shift the comparative advantage of Colombia towards manufacturing. Lastly, I show that this shift is explained by industry linkages because access to intermediate inputs benefits the manufacturing sector the most. The results demonstrate that a country’s comparative advantage is shaped materially by domestic trade costs, beyond the elements typically considered in the literature such as factor endowments, technology and institutions.
