- Título: A Household Search Model of the Labor Market with Home production (link al paper)
- Abstract: In most countries, men are the bread winners and women are the caregivers. This fact is reflected in lower labor participation, more part-time jobs, and higher time
use in home production for wives compared to their husbands. These differences tend to increase when children are present in the household. To understand the dynamics of time allocation and labor participation within households, I construct and estimate a
household level search model that explains the labor market and time use gender gaps. In the model, spouses jointly decide the optimal allocation of each spouse's leisure time, each spouse's home production time, and household consumption. From the counterfactual
experiments that aim at closing the gender gap, i.e., that aim to equate husbands’ and wives’ parameters, I found that to increase wives’ labor participation, home production gender differential productivities are as important as the probabilities of finding
or losing jobs. Counterfactual esperiments also show that part-time opportunities are an important driver for female participation, especially for those with high home productivity that would prefer labor flexibility to supply home production time still.
