Dear all,

The EcoSanRes knowledge node in Nepal (ENPHO) has brought us this very interesting news;

On 15 July Darechowk Village Development Committee, where ENPHO have been promoting ecosan through the node, declared itself as an open defecation free village. The village now has more than 700 ecosan toilets (all are wet ecosan toilets), which is the highest concentration of urine diverting toilets in Nepal. Enpho took some journalists there (about 3 hours drive from Kathmandu) to show them ENPHO´s Ecosan Resource Centre as well as the ODF declaration event, which resulted in good media coverage in press, radio as well as TV.

Attached please find a brief report from ENPHO on the event in the file section for your reference.

Best regards
madeleine

Dear all,

This project is quite interesting for us ecosan-ers. I have not had time to visit it but hope to next month.

One of the main reasons of the succes is that a local teacher (to my shame I have to say I forgot his name) has become very involved and has done a great deal od comunity mobilisation. From what I have heard this man's effords have been crucial to this impressive record.

An interesting debate could be held about the "wet-ecosan" concept here in Nepal. The basic set-up, as I have seen, is a urine diverting toilet with a pour flush solution for the faeces. So the urine is re-used as a fertiliser and the faeces are washed down into a collecting pit. The obvious advantage is that it is much more user friendly then UDDTs. The obvious drawback is that it requires pit-emptying and then a solution needs to be found for the faecal sludge. I don't know how they will do this in this project, but directly using it on the fields does not sound like safe re-use. So my questions would be: 1.)does anyone have a good treatment suggestion for the FS, and how will we empty the consolidated sludge?
2. Is there anyone who wants to argue that this is not ecosan? (as a matter of intellectual debate)

Kind regards

Marijn Zandee
