FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
With the hope of expanding our Spanish course offerings, the Department
of Foreign Languages and Literatures seeks a well-rounded specialist
with a preference for someone with a Ph.D. in Spanish Cultural
Studies/Literature, Linguistics, Translation/Interpretation Studies, or
a related field.
John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a senior college of the City
University of New York (CUNY), is an internationally recognized leader
in educating for justice, committed to the advancement of justice and
just societies. It is a public liberal arts college that enriches the
entire learning experience by highlighting themes of justice across the
arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Located steps from
Lincoln Center at the cultural heart of New York City, the college
offers bachelors and masters degrees and participates in the doctoral
programs of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
Under the leadership of its fourth president, Jeremy Travis, the
college
has experienced unprecedented faculty hiring, an expansion of its
curricular offerings, and the opening in 2011 of a new 600,000 square
foot building with a black-box theater, state-of-the-art lab space for
students and faculty, a moot courtroom, and a variety of virtual
learning settings.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in either Spanish Cultural Studies/Literature, Linguistics,
Translation/Interpretation Studies, or a related field from a
regionally
accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent non-U.S. institution by
date of appointment; native or near-native fluency in Spanish and
English; high proficiency in at least one other language; and
willingness and ability to teach courses relevant to the department
needs. Candidates are expected to bring a strong commitment to teaching
and mentoring undergraduates and to working with faculty, staff, and
students from diverse backgrounds. Teaching duties include a 3/4 course
load of undergraduate courses, but beginning tenure-track appointments
receive a significant course reduction while working toward tenure.
Service and publication are required. The Department of Foreign
Languages and Literatures offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Preference will be given to those who have ability to teach Spanish and
one other language. Familiarity with current instructional approaches,
assessments, and standards of competence and ethics strongly preferred.
The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet
eligibility requirements to work in the United States.

covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid
