This has been a challenging year: Climate change denialism at the highest levels, threats to democracy, criminalization of dissent, and weaponization of the law against those who dare to challenge corporate and governmental actors. In the face of these increased threats, Global Climate Legal Defense expanded where we work, hired another lawyer in Africa, and doubled down on fighting abusive lawsuits, called Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (SLAPPs).
As local legal NGOs, lawyers, and climate advocates insisted on a cleaner, more just world, we had their backs. In 2025, with your support, CliDef Supported dozens of local communities and lawyers in 18 countries on five continents Granted more than $2 million to address climate defenders’ legal needs Expanded our global legal network with eight new anchor organizations in five countries Helped secure the release of 200+ people from detention in Uganda alone Secured dismissals of SLAPP suits against climate defenders in three continents and launched the SLAPP Resilience Fund Trained several hundred climate advocates and journalists in legal defense, security, and resilience

CliDef launches the SLAPP Resilience Fund |
|
|
Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) are abusive lawsuits designed to shut down criticism or protest related to issues in the public interest.
The SLAPP Resilience Fund is a new fund initiated and managed by CliDef to respond strategically to SLAPPs against climate defenders around the world, with the aim of developing the law and building long-term protection against SLAPPs.
