Thanks Michael

This is worth sharing with the ERA list.
I hope you don’t mind!

Hello John Liu and Precious Phiri,

Are you only two people from the Global Earth Repair Summit who are at COP27?

How is COP27 going?  I hear that it was contentious starting and that the South had to really put its foot down to get climate reparations on the agenda.  Here is a quote from a news article. "COP27 looks like a fossil fuel industry trade show".

I am ccing Rob de Laet, Russ Spear, Ercilia Sahores, Candida Shinn, Milt Markewitz and Jon Schull here, since they are all likely interested in what happened to our Global Action Plan idea.

I am sad to report that my idea of a Global Action Plan has not materialized. A combination of small turnout, limited energy, limited financing and short prep time.

This does not negate the good things that did come (and will come) out of the Summit.

Although I cannot deliver you much ammunition for your COP27 work, here is what we have put together that you can forward to connections you make.

Love to you all,   Michael Pilarski

GLOBAL EARTH REPAIR SUMMIT

On October 21-24, 500 people from around the world met online to discuss the planet’s ecological and climate crises and what can be done about them. During the 4-day summit, a plethora of models and solutions were described.

Here is where you can watch the Summit recordings to check out the projects, models and solutions which were presented at the Summit:

 "To provide the energy and momentum required to heal the climate, people need hope. We are seeing great results as people engage in regeneration and restoration projects that are providing food and water security, restoring livelihoods and biodiversity, and cooling their landscapes." Peter Bruce-Iri

UPDATE ON THE ACTION PLAN

November 9, 2022

Originally we announced our intention for the Summit participants to make a “Global Earth Repair Action Plan” which we would present to COP27 and the world. This was beyond our capacity and given the short time-frame, we are not able to put together an action plan before COP27 but we will be working on this going forward. This is just be the start of an ongoing process whereby new ideas can be contributed by increasing numbers of people. This will take the form of a living document on the internet.

In the meantime here is a list of some of the top global earth repair plans to date.

RECOMMENDED BOOKS ON GLOBAL EARTH REPAIR

List and reviews by Michael Pilarski

As part of what we can send to our friends at COP27, here is a list of the best global plans for eco-restoration (which we know about) by some of the world’s top thinkers on global restoration.

* A New Water Paradigm: Water for the Recovery of the Climate.

Michal Kravcik, et al. 2017. Emphasizes hydrologic cycles in addressing climate change.  Kravcik and his associate Zuzana Mulkerin of Water Holistic West were part of the Summit.

* Seeding Hope with Water.

Rob de Laet. 2022. An entrepreneur works to protect “atmospheric rivers” of water vapor that originate in Amazon rainforests, affecting climate and precipitation worldwide. Rob de Laet presented at the Summit.

* How Plants Cool and Heal the Climate.

Peter Bruce-Iri. People have degraded about half of the vegetation of land and oceans thereby destabilising the climate and warming the planet. By stopping this destruction, revegetating as much as possible, regenerating soils and the water cycle, and eliminating our use of fossil fuels we can heal the climate sooner than you might think. Peter Bruce-Iri presented at the Summit.

* Working with plants, soils and water to cool the climate and rehydrate Earth’s landscapes.

Stefan Schwarzer, UNEP paper. Stefan organized an international online event “Climate Landscapes”, October18.-19, 2022, which was part of Eco-Restoration Week along with the Global Earth Repair Summit.

* Cows Save the Planet. Judith Schwartz, 2013

* Water in Plain Sight: Hope for a Thirsty World. Judith Schwartz, 2016

* The Reindeer Chronicles. Judith Schwartz, 2020

* Judith is working on a new book!

Three great books detailing many earth repair success stories. Taken together, these books are a noteworthy contribution to global earth repair. Judith was part of the Summit.

* A Carbon Sequestration Proposal for the World: Based on Reforestation, Improved Ecosystem Management & Increasing Soil Carbon Levels in Farm Soils. Michael Pilarski. 2010. Michael presented on this paper at the Summit and is the Summit convener.

* Geotherapy: Innovative Methods of Soil Fertilty Restoration, Carbon Sequestration, and Reversing CO2 Increase.

Thomas J. Goreau, Ronal W. Larson, Joanna Campe, editors. 2015, CRC Press. One of the best textbooks on the science of earth repair. While some chapters will only be read by specialists, the general chapters are highly recommended. Goreau was one of the keynote speakers at the 2019 Global Earth Repair Conference.

* Drawdown

Paul Hawken. 2017. https://drawdown.org/the-book

* Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation.

Paul Hawken., 2021.

https://regeneration.org/solutions

* Climate Restoration: The Only Future that will Sustain the Human Race.

Peter Fiekowsky. 2022.

Scientists and engineers have developed four major technologies for greenhouse gas removal and storage: Ocean iron fertilization; synthetic limestone manufacture; seaweed permaculture; and methane oxidation. Peter Fiekowsky presented at the Summit.

* We also solicit further review comments on the books listed above.

* Send recommendations/reviews to: friendso...@yahoo.com

NEXT STEPS

Our focus is on presenting a resource guide to the world. The world is full of existing successful models and well-thought out plans. These ideas/proposals/solutions can be compiled, organized and published so that people in every locality can choose the techniques and strategies that fit within their ecological and cultural conditions. There is no one-size-fits-all plan. Think of it as a set of recommendations, a menu of ideas, which people can choose from. They can be acted upon by individuals, communities, regions or even whole countries. Restoring ecosystem functions on all degraded lands and climate stabilization can only be accomplished by millions and billions of small actions on the ground. Our focus is bottom-up, grassroots solutions, techniques and strategies which can be done with local resources by local people. Accessible and affordable.

Here is where you can contribute to that living document with your own action ideas and input.

Hi Michael + all,
I think that my book, Hydrate the Earth: the forgotten role of water in the climate crisis  should be included on that list. It was published  in 2021 by Éditions la Butineuse. It is available in both English and French. There is quite a movement starting up in France, championed by a group called The Water Family and a couple of well known hydrologists, notably Emma Haziza, who is getting a lot of press lately.
The book is a short overview of the principles of waters role in regulating climate, followed by methods and examples of how to restore water cycles. It is easy to read and accessible for the general public. I am working on an even simpler version and a study guide to bring the subject matter to schools and teachers.

Dear all, I have not studied this document, but it looks that the Eco Restoration is becoming more central in climate action, see this

Dears, do you think that the initiative will appear in „summary for politicians“?

Best regards

They are still seeing action around water as mitigation and adaption, but not as causal. But, hey, as long as action is being taken it’s a good thing.
