The term "geoengineering" was coined in the early 1970s by Italian physicist Cesare Marchetti. He first described it in a 1977 paper published in the journal Climatic Change

Here is what Wikipedia says.

Geoengineering (also known as climate engineering or climate intervention) is the deliberate large-scale interventions in the Earth’s climate system intended to counteract human-caused climate change.^[1] The term commonly encompasses two broad categories: large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and solar radiation modification (SRM). CDR involves techniques to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and is generally considered a form of climate change mitigation. 

What Tom points out here (and mentioned in Brian's HPAC discussion,) is that humans have been involved in large-scale geoengineering experiments for thousands of years, (eg. large scale deforestation).  So geoengineering is a new term for a process that humans have been doing for hundreds and thousands of years.  Pretty much all past human geoengineering has been "degenerative geoengineering".  What Tom, and I (and many others) are now calling for is "regenerative geoengineering". 

There is lots more to unpack here, and many debates to be held.  Personally I am focused on what are broadly termed "nature-based solutions".  I will be hosting a Global Earth Repair Convergence in May 2026 focused on these "regenerative geoengineering strategies".  Many HPAC and EcoRestoration Alliance individuals will be part of the Convergence.   Invitations and details will follow soon. 

Tom Goreau was one of the keynote speakers at our 2019 Global Earth Repair Conference.
