Free Webinar: Prevailing Wildfire Myths. Monday, September 22 at 7:00 PM (Eastern Time)
What if most of what you heard or read about wildfires turned out to be untrue? Sadly, this is the case. Both the news media and the scientific literature are dominated by timber industry mythology and creative half truths about what our forests need and how to protect our communities from the threat of wildfire.
We are also treated to persistent falsehoods about the costs and benefits of natural fire.
Did you know? Some of the most biologically diverse forests result from high intensity fires. They are not to be dreaded, but to be embraced.
And the way to protect people and communities is not to waste valuable resources fighting fires in the wildlands. The way to protect people and communities is to make buildings fireproof and then provide evacuation planning and assistance, all of which is cheaper and more effective than the heroic efforts to fight fires wherever they occur, including on land far removed from homes and communities.
And how does any of this relate to climate change?
These are some of the issues we will discuss.
