Woodpeckers & Climate. Friday October 24 at 3:00 PM (Eastern Time)
How can saving woodpeckers help us also save the climate?
What if we protected woodpeckers? What effect would that have on the climate?
To protect woodpeckers, we would need to protect their food sources, including living and dead trees and the beetles that thrive, especially on dead trees.
Who wants to cut down dead trees? Well, lots of people, and that’s what we’ll talk about.
Dead wood is the life of the forest, including the place where woodpeckers get their food. But how does dead wood relate to our climate? We’ll talk about that, too.
And how is the assault on woodpecker habitat paid for with our tax dollars?
We will study the black-backed woodpecker, whose habitat is being threatened by logging and deforestation, much of it in the name of renewable energy and wildfire protection.
Let’s separate truth from fiction, so we can be effective advocates for our forests and our woodpeckers and our climate!
